The Federal Military Academy (commonly called FMA or The Academy, or metonymically as Newcastle) is a four-year federal service academy in southern Alexandria Territory near Newcastle in Meridon. It employs 410 full-time faculty members and has a student body of approximately 2,400 full-time students.

Freeport Military Academy is the seniormost and most prestigious of the Defense Academy Group's service colleges in terms of precedence and enrollment for the Army. It is the second seniormost federal service academy behind the Federal Naval Academy, and is one of 4 of the Defense Service Academies- those schools funded entirely by the Defense Department

Admission is extremely selective, with the FMA accepting only about 4% of qualified applicants each year for admission. While collegiate education is not a requirement for commissioning to officer ranks, it is required to advance beyond the pay grade of OF3 and is required for certain job fields, which means that many seeking to make a career in the Meridon Defense Forces pursue enrollment at a service academy. Applicants must possess outstanding academic, athletic, and extracurricular accolades to be competitive for acceptance. Students are considered officer candidates through the four-year program and are referred to as cadets. All expenses are paid for by the Meridon Defense Forces, in exchange for an obligation of active-duty service for a varying term, usually from 4 to 8 years post-graduation.

The Federal Military Academy is a fully-accredited academic institution that grants bachelors degrees in both sciences and arts. The program emphasizes physical, academic and leadership performances and mandatory participation in organized intramural and/or competitive athletics.

The academic program grants a bachelor of science degree with a curriculum that grades cadets' performance upon a broad academic program, military leadership performance, and mandatory participation in competitive athletics. Cadets are required to adhere to the school's honor code. The academy bases a cadet's leadership experience as a development of all three pillars of performance: academics, physical, and military.
