Organization of warships

Operational formations

The two established types of operational naval formations in the Meridonian Navy are Carrier Task Groups (CTGs) and Amphibious Ready Groups (ARGs). These forces are designated and self-contained combatant forces as opposed to Surface Action Groups, which are normally adhoc and will take ships as needed from standing formations. Carrier Task Groups may vary in size to be smaller or larger than their prescribed units depending on the requirements of a mission. Escorting warships will rotate out of service with a CTG usually after an 18 month to 3 year service with the formation for a low-readiness period. Amphibious Ready Groups do not change in size, although they may be (and regularly are) escorted by other warships. Rarely but occasionally will ships rotate spots from within ARG formations.

Carrier Task Groups

Carrier Task Groups (CTGs) comprise of an aircraft carrier, its embarked airwing, and its escorting warships. By normal doctrine, this will include 1 general purpose (Otapara-class) destroyer, 2 air warfare (Helena-class) destroyers, two frigates of the Bell-class or (Taga-class), and a nuclear fast attack submarine. This may be reduced or enhanced based off of operational requirements. The aircraft carrier is the only permanently assigned member of the strike group, whose escorts will rotate in on a basis of usually 18 months to 3 years from surface and submarine squadrons. Meridon operates 11 Carrier Task Groups.

F6M2 wasps assigned to 4 Carrier Air Group, 4 Carrier Task Group, take off from the Kohaku during routine flight operations.

Amphibious Ready Groups

Amphibious Ready Groups (ARGs) comprise the maritime sustainment element of Regiment Marines Commando Marine Amphibious Units (MAUs), the expeditionary forces-in-readiness. Amphibious Ready Groups are designed to be able to independently conduct and sustain amphibious operations of any nature unsupported for up to 15 days. Amphibious Ready Groups, while often escorted by warships, do not include them in their integral organization. Amphibious Ready Groups consist of three ships- a landing platform dock (normally of the Argos-class), which serves as the primary transport of infantry and vehicles and as flagship; a landing helicopter dock (of the Maratea-class) which carries the ARG's aviation element; and a landing ship dock (Hemana-class) which carries a large amount of its supplies.

Surface Squadrons

Surface Squadrons (SUFRONs) are normally composed of 1 or 2 guided missile cruisers and 5 to 6 guided missile destroyers; or 5 to 6 frigates. SUFRONs are administrative, logistical and control units, and rarely (if ever) deploy as a full operational unit. Surface squadrons more regularly contribute forces to standing operational groups or ad-hoc groups in the form of surface action groups.

Submarine Squadrons

Submarine squadrons are composed of 5 submarines per squadron and are purely an administrative and logistical formation- as such, submarine squadrons do not have flagships and do not conduct operations as an operational unit. The exception to this rule is in 3 Submarine Squadron, which contains the Navy's Barracuda-class guided missile submarines; who have conducted combined operations in the past as part of operational evaluations in their capacity as strategic weapons platforms- however they do not regularly, nor does doctrine call for, their massed employment. The other submarine squadrons are composed of Vigil-class nuclear ballistic missile submarines, Moray-class nuclear fast attack submarines and Orca and Mako-class diesel electric submarines. While both nuclear and diesel-electric submarines are capable of operating beyond Meridonian waters, only nuclear-powered submarines perform this duty regularly. Meridon currently maintains 14 submarine squadrons- # nuclear-powered, # diesel electric and # of nuclear-powered guided missile submarines.

Naval Mine Countermeasures Group

The Naval Mine Countermeasures Group is a grouping of 6 minehunters operationally maintained for mine clearance operations. Normally, ships in this formation will operate as detachments where required operationally, and there are provisions for the group to sortie as a whole, though it is unlikely to operationally conduct such a mission.

Patrol Squadrons

Patrol squadrons are groups of patrol vessels grouped into geographically oriented squadrons for local area patrol of Meridonian waters, although they may (rarely) be deployed abroad. Operated and grouped under the Naval Patrol Service (NPS), these vessels primarily conduct interdiction, lifesaving, law enforcement, patrol operations, and other augments.

Assault Craft Squadrons

Assault Craft squadrons are organizational and training groupings of AV20 Landing Craft Combatant landing craft. Normally, these vehicles will embark with ARGs to provide ship-to-shore connection, however their long range allows them to conduct some stand-off operations- they are regularly used as ferry vessels for military equipment within the Meridonian archipelago. They are not considered commissioned vessels and do not have billeted commanding officers, but they remain on the Navy Roster regardless.

Unsorted Vessels

As of current, the only unsorted major vessel of the Meridonian Navy is the Mercy, a converted Hemana-class dock landing ship that was converted to conduct humanitarian and medical duties.

Flying units

Type Commands

Type Commands serve as the organizational and administrative control groups for various aircraft squadrons- they are primarily responsible for ensuring forces are equipped, trained, and provisioned to conduct operations with their operational command units. Type Commands do not operate as operational groups, but serve to ensure readiness, create and maintain doctrine, and enhance fleet operational efficiency.

Navy Tactical Air Command

Navy Tactical Air Command (NAVTACAIRCOM) provides the fleet Carrier Task Groups with combat-ready and carrier-deployable aircraft squadrons. This command comprises all naval fighter, electronic attack, and airborne control squadrons.

Naval Fighter Squadrons (NFS or NAVFITRON) are a 12-strong formation of carrier-capable fighter aircraft of F5M Lynx or F6M Wasp type. Naval Fighter Squadrons conduct combat air control, interdiction, fleet defense, escort, ground and maritime attack, close and deep air support, force projection, suppression/destruction of enemy air defenses, and other such missions.

Naval Electronic Attack Squadrons (NEAS or NAVLECTAKRON) are 8 or 10 strong formations of carrier-capable E6M3 Backwave electronics warfare aircraft. Naval Electronic Attack squadrons provide electronic warfare support to Carrier Task Groups and conduct electronic intelligence gathering operations, as well as suppression of enemy air defense operations.

Naval Airborne Control Squadrons (NACS or NAVAIRTROLRON) are 5 strong formations of carrier-capable S2M3 or S2M4 Siren airborne early warning and control (AEWC) aircraft. Naval Airborne Control Squadrons provide all-weather early warning, aircraft control, airborne battle management, communications relay, and command and control operations across all naval mission spectrums.

Naval Sea Control Squadrons (NSCS or NAVSEATROLRON) are 8-strong formations of carrier capable C2M or C2M2 Triton multirole aircraft. Naval Sea Control Squadron provide the Carrier Task Group with long-range and endurance fixed-wing patrol, reconnaissance and antisubmarine warfare capabilities, as well as capabilities for aerial refueling, carrier onboard delivery, surface strike, and other tasks.

Sea Control Command

Sea Control Command (NAVSEATROLCOM) provides the fleet with long-range maritime patrol, surveillance and reconnaissance squadrons. This command comprises all maritime patrol squadrons, including unmanned squadrons.

Maritime Patrol Squadrons (MPS or PATRON) are land-based maritime patrol squadrons of 10 or 12 M7M Kingfisher or M5M Pelican maritime patrol aircraft. These aircraft are used for reconnaissance, anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, maritime patrol, intelligence gatherings, electronics and signals intelligence, along other such duties such as enforcement actions in support of anti-piracy and fishing activities. Unmanned squadrons utilize Q6M2 Crow unmanned aircraft for much the same purpose.

Naval Helicopter Command

Naval Helicopter Command (NAVHELCOM) furnishes the fleet with operationally-capable rotary wing squadrons accomplishing a wide variety of missions. This command includes general utility, antisubmarine, mine countermeasures, and unmanned reconnaissance helicopter squadrons. Utility and antisubmarine helicopter squadrons normally deploy as detachments on major warship formations.

Naval Helicopter Squadrons (NHS or NAVHELRON) are rotary wing squadrons of 10, 12 or 14 H50M6 Seahawk helicopters which serve in the utility, plane guard, CSAR, logistical, surface combat and special operations support capacities, conducting a wide range of duties that are not normally performed by dedicated antisubmarine helicopters.

Naval Antisubmarine Helicopter Squadrons (NAHS or NAVASHELRON) are rotary wing squadrons of 8 to 12 H50M5 Seahawk anti-submarine helicopters which normally deploy aboard warships of various classes, either as detachments or as a whole, to conduct anti-submarine operations. H50M5 helicopters are also capable of maritime strike, special forces support, and other non-logistics roles.

Naval Airborne Mine Countermeasures Squadrons (NAMCS or NAVAIRMICOMRON) comprise the two rotary-wing anti-mine helicopter squadrons which are equipped each with 8 H62M3 Cataphract mine countermeasures aircraft. These aircraft conduct counter-mine operations, and are capable of specialized heavy lift operations and limited combat support roles, including medical evacuation and personnel transport.

Naval Airlift Command

Naval Airlift Command (NAVARLFTCOM) provides the fleet with tactical, routine and nonroutine transport of personnel, supplies and material, and conducts airlift, sustainment, VIP transport, carrier onboard delivery, and other such operations. This command comprises of all naval tactical logistics squadrons, transport squadrons, and logistic squadrons.

Naval Logistics Squadrons (NLS or NAVLOGRON) comprise the 3 carrier-capable carrier onboard delivery (COD) squadrons responsible for logistical support linkage between Carrier Task Groups and onshore facilities and logistic links. They comprise of 10 C2M Triton conventional; or C11M Adjutant tiltrotor aircraft.

Naval Tactical Logistics Squadrons (NTLS or NAVTACLOGRON) provide highly flexible logistics support to naval units and combatant commanders globally by providing a wide variety of airlift services, including aerial refueling, tactical airlift, assault support, special warfare support, medical evacuation, and conducting resupply operations into unimproved landing zones. They operate 10 or 12 C8M4 D Pecheron or C13M Pegasus airlift aircraft.

Naval Transport Squadrons (NTS or NAVTRANSRON) provide flexible airlift and transport for men, material, and VIP groups across the fleet and globally. They consist of anywhere from 8 to 12 V4M4 Kingbird, V10M Swanbird, or V7M Constellation transports.

Education and Training Command

Naval Air Education and Training Command (NAVAIREDTRAINCOM) prepares, trains, and supplies fleet operational squadrons with mission-ready naval aviators and aircrew. This command comprises of all naval air training squadrons.

Special Mission Forces

Naval Special Mission Forces (NAVSPECMISFOR) provides special operations aviation forces to the fleet, and consists of all special missions and special missions transport squadrons.

Special Mission Squadrons (NSMS or NAVSPECMIRON) primarily provide support to special forces operations or special purpose operations.

Operational Commands

Operational commands organize mission-ready forces into scalable, deployable formations for availability for commanders to carry out missions. As opposed to type commands, operational commands house functional, mission-capable units under their auspices and are therefore responsible for ensuring mission completion and availability.

Fleet Air Component

The Fleet Air Component (FLTAIRCOMP) comprises all carrier-based aviation units assigned to the 5 Carrier Air Groups (CAGs) aboard the Navy's aircraft carriers, including fighter, electronic attack, airborne control and helicopter units. Each Carrier Air Group is assigned to its numerically corresponding Carrier Task Group- Carrier Air Group 3 would be assigned to Carrier Task Group 3, and so forth.
