The Xhua River is the second-longest river in Yuan (after the Syhagtze River) and the sixth-longest river in the world, with an estimated length of 3,464 km (2,152 mi). Originating in the glacial lake of Dengang Lake, the river flows generally southwest, carving into the Central Yuan plain before emptying into the Sancheon Gulf. The river basin was the birthplace of ancient Yuaneze civilization. The dynasties of Yuan leading to the Heng based their power around the river, and as such the majority of the modern Yuaneze population lives near the river. Many of Yuan's major cities, including the capital of Shanghan, grew along the banks.
