The Ronkonkoma-class has two primary roles- serving as a logistical ‘midway’ point between further at-sea amphibious warfare vessels and forces operating on land; and serving as a command vessel for larger amphibious task forces. These vessels are primarily oriented for the low-end to mid-end fight and are intended as ‘enablers’ for the high-end fight, requiring assets in place to protect it or the mitigation of threats to it. It is built from a modified commercial standpoint and fitted with a variety of self-defense weapons. |
