Erwin Pohl (28 January 1912 - 3 February 2001) was a Besmenian politician, who served as the 8th President of Besmenia between 1973 and 1979. Before that, Pohl served as the first Governor of Heraldsteinland from 1967 to 1973.

Before that, Pohl served as foreign minister from 1964 to 1972 and between 1960 and 1964 as federal minister for internal Besmenian relations.
Early life
Erwin Pohl was born on January 28, 1912 in Behringen, Metakumburg, Kingdom of Besmenia. Pohl was the son of Richard Pohl (1860-1942), who was ambassador for Zamastan from 1914 to 1920, and the history teacher Bertha Pohl (1864-1950, née Müller). Since his father was an ambassador for Zamastan, Pohl lived in Tofino until he was 8 years old. In March 1920 the family moved back to Besmenia to Melmingia. When Pohl was 14 years old, the border between West Besmenia and East Besmenia was closed under the orders of Karl Ochsenbein.
Education
In 1931 Pohl began studying law at Karl Ochsenbein University (today: North Melmingian University), which he successfully completed in 1936. During his studies, Pohl worked from 1932 to 1936 as an assistant for the lawyer Heinrich Mayer.

Pohl in the West Besmenian Revolution
Pohl is today considered the most popular of Besmenia's presidents. In his later years after his presidency, Pohl gained a positive reputation as an elder statesman across party lines in Besmenia.
Even in his youth, Pohl had an aversion and dissatisfaction with the fascist regime in West Besmenia. For example, he showed no interest in joining the Besmenian National Union. When the West Besmenian Revolution began at the end of May 1966 with the aim of overthrowing the fascist regime and introducing democracy, Pohl showed great interest and joined the anti-government protesters. Pohl was one of the people who stormed Garnsberg Castle (then the residence of the West Besmenian supreme leader) on June 7, 1966.

The relationship between Pohl and Robert Gleitzmann had been strained since the late 1960s. Pohl was an opponent of the BVP-BRP government under Gleitzmann as Prime Minister, Pohl himself replied to the government participation of the BRP that this government could harm Besmenia internationally. According to reports, after the 1976 election Pohl begged Gleitzmann to form a coalition government with either the FBBP or the SDU, while Gleitzmann, on the contrary, continued to work with the BRP. Pohl only reluctantly accepted the swearing-in of the Second Gleitzmann cabinet.
