Pavlovskaya (Alutiiq: Sun'aq; Russian: Павловская) is an unincorporated township in the Governorate of Alaska. Located on Kodiak Island, all commercial transportation between the island's communities and the outside world goes through this city via ferryboat or airline. Originally inhabited by Alutiiq natives, the city was settled in the 18th century by the subjects of the Russian crown and, for a time, served as the capital of Russian Alaska.
In the 1860s Pavlovskaya developed its present commercial fishing center which continues to be the mainstay of its economy. Pavlovskaya also attracts tourism offering special hunting and fishing permits for excursions further into Kodiak Island. Transportation to and from the island is provided by ferry service on the Alaska Marine Highway as well as local commercial airlines.
