Slavorossiya (Russian: Славоросия; Tlingit: Yaakwdáat) is an incorporated township in the Governorate of Alaska.

History

Originally inhabited by the Tlingit people, Slavorossiya's origins began when the Shelikhov-Golikov Company established a fort at the site of the modern town in 1795 to facilitate the sea otter trade with the natives. In the early 19th century, after the Russians established an exclusive fishing zone for Russian settlers, the Tlingit tribes in the area became hostile and a Tlingit war party attacked and destroyed much of the fort.

After a long period of tension between the remaining settlers and Tlingit tribes, the Tlingit tribesmen were subdued by the Russian Naval forces at Novoarchangelsk and after the nationalization of the Russian-American Company in 1867 new settlers arrived in the town which was officially named Slavorossiya in 1869.

By 1886 the black sand beaches of Slavorossiya were being mined for gold, and in 1889 the Swedish Free Mission Church and Swedish settlers arrived in the town opening a sawmill, a Lutheran Church and a school. A cannery, another sawmill, a general store and a railroad were constructed by the Amero-Alaskan headed Stimson Lumber Company. Since its opening the Stimson Cannery has become the center of Slavorossiya's economy and much of the town is centered around it as workers built houses in close proximity to their workplace.
