Numerous linguists attest that the native name of Elstock (''Elstók'' in {{wp|Kashubian language|Elsian}}) derives from the {{wp|Slavic languages|Slavic}} term ''Elstoc'' (''*els-tokŭ'', or "fork of the Els"), named after the river [[Els]] that runs through the city before draining into the [[Bay of Elstock]]. Before the Elsian language was standardized in the 19th century, the port previously appeared in documents as alternatively ''Elstik'', ''Alztyk'', ''Elztuk'', and ''Elczók''.


The {{wp|German language|German}} ''Elstock'' is also assumed to be derived from the original Slavic term, and has in the past appeared as ''Elsstok'', ''Elßtok'', ''Alstock'', or ''Elztock'' in various historical documents.
