The station serves its namesake, Vesteliensgade, and the immediate surrounding area, which is in the city's commercial centre. The station received almost 13 million passengers in 2021, making it the most-used station on the network. The station was designed by a team of four architects, and features a colourful display of lights on each of its four underground platforms, which illuminate the walls of the station. Vesteliensgade opened in 1975, and was one of the inaugural stops on the Letbane when it first opened.
