The AFF consists of three service branches: The Ankat People's Army, Ankat People's Air Force, and the Ankat People's Navy. Since it's creation during the Ankati Revolution, the AAF have been under the control of the President of the Socialist Republic, which as of May 2021 was Suneshka Iriyagolla.

During the Ankati Revolution the AAF went by the name of the Socialist Army (Terasi: සමාජවාදී හමුදාව; tr Samājavādī Hamudāva). The Socialist Army was one of the major combatants in the civil war, initially working with others before becoming powerful enough to be the largest faction alongside the Torists. It was formally retitled as the Ankat Armed Forces shortly after the capture of Nilagne Naegima at the end of the war.
