Warrant officer ranks

Warrant Officers rank intermediately between other ranks and commissioned officers in that they hold a Federal warrant of authority rather than a commission as do commissioned officers. The Army is the only branch that recruits Warrant Officers rather than exclusively promoting them from the ranks.

The Army and Regiment Marines Commando utilizes Warrant Officer Classes 5 through 3 for technical specialists who require a higher grade of training and authority for their jobs but do not require the command authority of an officer's commission- usually for senior special forces operators and aviators. Warrant Officer classes 1 and 2 exist in all services as the senior-most non commissioned officers, holding a Federal warrant of authority that is below a Federal Commission that would belong to an officer. WOC2s in the Army and RMC will fill battalion-grade and higher non-commissioned officer billets, while WOC2s in the Navy and Air Forces often serve as senior department heads or assistant heads of larger departments. WOC1s in the Army and Marines serve as senior other rankers in the regiment and higher areas, while in the Air Forces and Navy will serve as senior enlistedmen in major departments or assignments. Each service has an appointed WOC1 to serve as the senior other rank advisor to senior branch staff.

As with OR1 and OR2 ranks, Air Force and Navy OR3s will almost always be addressed by a job title. An Air Force OR3 servicing as a military policeman will be referred to as a Leading Patrolman.

Army OR1s may often have; and Navy/Air Force OR1 and OR2s will almost always have a job title in place of their rank. a Navy Yeoman of the rank of OR2 will be addressed as a Senior Yeoman, while an Army OR1 serving as an artilleryman will be known as a Gunner. Marines may be referred to as either or both- an engineer in the Marines may be referred to as a Marine or a Marine Sapper, but never as a Sapper as that would indicate him as a member of the Army.
