Karim Ali Al Kharrabi (Arabic : كريم علي الخرابي), also known as Karim Al Kharrabi (Arabic : كريم الخرابي) (May 13 1945 - October 15 2000), was a Salamati politician and leader of Magrekia from 1981 to 1989.
Early life
Karim Al Kharrabi is born on May 13 1945 in Ghusat, in modern-day Salamat. He is the second out of the eight children of Ilias and Shirin Al Kharrabi. Karim comes from the Kharraba tribe, which is well-implanted in the west of the country and is a major tribe, with around 2 000 000 people belonging to this tribe all around Anteria. His brother was the Salamati dictator Jalil Al Kharrabi.
Karim learned to read, write and count in a Quranic school of Ghusat, but did not attend Riamese standard school. However, he was perseverant and wanted to learn, so he regularly stole books in the Charles IV school group of Ghusat. However, he was caught stealing by a teacher and was forced to stop.
At the age of 18, he volunteered to join the Riamese army, but unfortunately his proposal was rejected. His mother said "He was frustrated, he didn't know what to do of his own life". He then began drinking heavily and chain smoking. Two years later, he married Aisha Bouarfa, a girl from a rich family of the region. Aisha often offered him books, particularily books about politics, and he got interested and passionnate about it.
Politics and rise to power
He became more and more interested in Islamic socialism and in 1970, he met the head of the ideology, Ahmad Abbas, in Dar Al Hamma. For the next five years, he worked for Abbas as a partner and in 1973, they founded a clandestine party, the Party for Socialism, which had national branches in several countries, including Salamat and Magrekia. Karim also heavily influenced his little brother Jalil in adhering to the ideology.
Karim then had problems with the Salamati justice due to drunk driving and consommation of intoxicants (alcohol). He fled to Magrekia in March 1975 and met TBA, which was the leader of the Party for Socialism in Magrekia branch. They started working together but TBA died in 1977 from leukemia, forcing Karim to take the leadership of the illegal party.
