Leighton attended Une Grad State University with a scholarship, he studied political science and philosophy. Leighton founded the [[Green Party of Fichmanistan|Green Party]] in 1984 when he was 22 years old and still in college. Leighton ran for CA in Une Grad in 1986 immediately after he graduated. Leighton narrowly beat incumbent Liberal Jeremy Fork, and sat on the assembly for two full five year terms. In 1997 Leighton succsesfully ran for MHP representing Western Attacote.
