The Navish Superliga, commonly known as Superliga or simpy NSL, is a Navish professional league for men's association football clubs. The league is Navack's primary domestic football competition, located at the top of the football league system. The league hosts 20 clubs and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the bottom three teams each season being relegated to KONET Liga B. It is through Superliga that Navish teams are selected to the Champions Cup, and the Asuran League (including the champion of the Navish Cup).
Due to the Republican Revolution of 1921, football in Navack started off late when compared to the Midrasian and Newreyan leagues. The official first season was played in 1925, with only teams established prior to 1920 allowed. The league was initially known as the Whalberg's Football League of Navack and only 7 teams played its first edition. In 1926, 3 more teams were allowed into the league after paying a high registration fee to the NFF. In 1932, due to sponsoring complications and new expansion teams, the league became too expensive, having to be split in two: Eliteliga and Andreliga. The EL sponsor managed to finance and support a 14 teams league, whereas AL supported only 8 teams. Each champion played against each other in the Navish Super cup, a new competition. The format lasted until 1957, when AL’s sponsor went bankrupt. In the meantime, only Aanvobar SK was added to EL. In 1957, a fusion occured between the AL and EL, giving birth to the Navish Superliga.
The NSL is, according to FFA's domestic league coefficient, one of the most dominating domestic competition in Aeia, facing a considerable competition from the Midrasian Liga Premiére. Unlike other domestic leagues, the Superliga is considered one of the most balanced with a considerable number of teams winning the trophy. Navish teams dominate the Asuran League, with Lhedvin FK as the latest champion. Navish teams are yet to win a Champions Cup, though both Bersk SK and Dynamesk SK have reached the finals.
Format
The competition format follows the usual double round-robin format. During the course of a season, which lasts from August to May, each club plays every other club twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 38 matchdays. Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points, with the highest-ranked club at the end of the season crowned champion.
Promotion and relegation
A system of promotion and relegation exists across the entirety of the Navish Football Federation. The three lowest placed teams in Superliga are relegated to the K-Liga B, and the top two teams from the K-Liga B promoted to Superliga, with an additional club promoted after a series of play-offs involving the third, fourth, fifth and sixth placed clubs. The lowest ranked clubs from K-Liga B are relegated to K-Liga C the bottom tier of Navish professional football. Any teams relegated from K-Liga C are regarded as non-league teams and can only play in the amateur Navish and regional footballing ladder.
Ranking of clubs on equal points
In cases where overall points are equal between two or more teams, the following tie-break criteria is applied:
- overall goal difference
- overall goals scored
- overall goals conceded
- head-to-head results
- head-to-head goals scored
- fair-play scales (1 point for a yellow card, 2 points for 2nd yellow card/ejection, 3 points for straight red: least points wins)
Qualifying for international competitions
The top teams in the league qualify for the FFA Champions Cup. Based on Superliga's league coefficient, Navack is able to send a total of 3 teams to the competition. The first, second and third placed teams within the league gain qualification for the tournament. Superliga's fourth, fith and sixth placed teams within Superliga and the champion of the Navish Cup gain qualification to the Asuran League.
Teams
A total of 20 teams contest the league in its current season, including 17 sides from the 2018-19 season and three promoted from K-Liga B. These are two clubs promoted directly from that division (Lesere SK and Besborg Fotball), and the winner of the K-Liga B play-offs, Nodevag 66.
