The Second Battle of Portus Regalis was the final battle in Cadenza's attempted conquest of the Scottopian Isles, commencing on May 29, 1614. The battle also formed part of the War of the Magpie and the Dragon, the wider conflict of Cadenza against the Empire of Exponent.
Background
The Scottopian Isles had been claimed as territory of the Exponential Crown since 1420, but the actuality of this was only officially on paper as the reality on the ground was quite the contrary. By the time of the battle, the area under direct Imperial control had shrunk to the area around Portus Regalis. The rest of the country was controlled by the Gaelic lordships who paid tribute to the crown in return for peace.
When Cadenzan forces captured the Imperial port city, a number of fleeing Exponential admiistrators made their way to the various Scottopian kings and lords, propsing further independence and recognition, as well as additional trade concessions, in return for their assistance in driving out the invaders. For many of these leaders, the proposal appeared worth it, and they gathered their forces for war.
