The Second Battle of Portus Regalis, fought on 29 May 1614, was the second major land battle in Cadenza's attempt to conquest the Scottopian Isles, then part of the Empire of Exponent. Fought under the walls of Portus Regalis, the seat of the Exponential administration in Scottopia, this was the first pitched battle of the War of the Magpie and the Dragon, the wider conflict of Cadenza against Exponent. Portus Regalis had been captured by Cadenzan forces under Teodos Molatiri on 5 May, and the Scottopians under Baxter III, urged by Exponential leaders, rallied to retake the city.

Background

The Scottopian Isles had been claimed as territory of the Exponential Crown since 1420, but the actuality of this was only officially on paper as the reality on the ground was quite the contrary. By the time of the battle, the area under direct Imperial control had shrunk to the area around Portus Regalis. The rest of the country was controlled by the Gaelic lordships who paid tribute to the crown in return for peace.

When Cadenzan forces captured the Imperial port city, a number of fleeing Exponential administrators made their way to the various Scottopian kings and lords, proposing further independence and recognition, as well as additional trade concessions, in return for their assistance in driving out the invaders. For many of these leaders, the proposal appeared worthwhile, and they gathered their forces for war.
