Erwin Pohl was born on January 28, 1912 in Behringen, Metakumburg, Kingdom of Besmenia. Pohl was the son of Richard Pohl (1860-1942), who was ambassador for Zamastan from 1914 to 1920, and the history teacher Bertha Pohl (1864-1950, née Müller).
