It has an urban population of 3,754,238 and is the center of the Tupawasi Metropolitan Area, has an estimated 5.1 million residents. It is one of the highest-altitude cities in the world and is built around the site of the Tupawasi Palace Complex, one of the world's largest buildings and a historical residence of the former Kayahallpan royal family, the Sapa Inkas.
