Melmingen is the capital and most populous city of the Besmenian state Maurenmark, and after Laitstadt the second largest city in Besmenia. Melmingen was from 1821 to 1923 the capital of the Kingdom of Besmenia, from 1923 to 1966 of the Besmenian Empire and from 1966 to 1967 the capital of the Besmenian Republic.
As the seat of the state government of Maurenmark and the State Chamber of Maurenmark as well as numerous state authorities, the city is the political center of Maurenmark. In addition, some important educational and cultural institutions of the federal state are concentrated here.
