Orbis Mortem (死のリング Shi no Ringu) is a 2014 Nihhonese Psychological horror film directed and produced by Hideo Hitani and written by Goro Sugiyama, adapted from the novel Orbis by Kenzo Yukizawa, which in turn draws on the Nihhonese folk tale Banchō Sarayashiki. The film stars Akino Terai and Richard Philip Todd. The film follows TV reporter Yuki and her husband as they caught up in a series of deaths surrounding a cursed video tape.
Production took approximately 9 months. At the premiere, The film received universal acclaim with 97% rating. An indirect sequel, Orbis Mortem 2 followed and did not coincide with the film's plot.
Plot
Cast
- Akino Terai as Yuki Takada, a journalist who investigates her niece's death and finds the cursed videotape; Alive.
- Richard Philip Todd as Junichi Honda, Yuki's husband, a businessman and professor at a military college. He has a degree of sixth sense that detects supernatural auras; Alive.
- James Roberts as William Smith, a university professor from Lucis who has a sixth sense like Junichi and one of Reiko's friends. He arrives in Nihhon-koku from Lucis to help with the mystery on the video; Killed by Sugami.
- Taletha Tsukimi as Sugami Hanagawa, the antagonist of the film. A woman with psychic powers who was thrown down a well where she died, but her spirit lived on within a videotape.
- Myeong Kwang-cho as Lee Seo-ha, a Joyonghean paranormal expert who aids in Reiko's quest; Killed by Sugami.
- Yuki Kaizuka as Mai Takano, Junichi's student; Never mentioned.
- Sayori Furakawa as Tomoko Ōishi, Reiko's niece who watches the cursed videotape and is amongst its first victims; Killed by Sugami.
- Lisette Ayame as Frances Kurahashi, Tomoko's Nihhonese-Lucian best friend; Traumatized.
