The Volsung Regiment is a non-government armed force active in much of the world. It is legally a private military company incorporated and based in Rökkurlynd. As of 2024 it has some 4,000 'military employees' on its books, of which roughly 50% consist of defectors from the Elatian military or security services. Prominent competitors of the Regiment include the Duklav's Legion and Awara Clan Incorporated.
Overview
One of the most prolific of Elatia's exports subsequent to the Great Freeze of the late-80's and early-90's was soldiers. A significant portion of these defectors consist of former members of the Blessed Army or the Ecclesia Guard, usually career officers and non-commissioned officers rather than conscripts. These people already possess military training, many being veterans of the civil conflicts against insurgents and rebels of the 1990's, or more recently in the Enyaman Civil War, but lack qualifications needed to thrive in a modern quasi-market economy. Accordingly, many turn to the only skill which they have thoroughly mastered, that being the employment of arms.
Sigurd Olaffson was an Elatian of Rokkuringur ancestry and used it as the basis for the regiment's norse-themed gimmick. He was the first to realise the potential of a fighting regiment with its core based on former Elatians. Formerly a staff officer in the Elatian Naval Infantry and a veteran of the conflicts of the 1990's, he was forced to flee the country in the wake of Marcus the Purifier's purge of the Elatian security system soon after the latter's ascension as Supreme Prophet in the early 2010's. Whilst Olafsson survived, many of his friends and family were hunted down and executed. Olafsson used his organisational talents to found a military unit which is run as a commercial enterprise, attracting the latent pool of skilled military personnel residing in Rokkyurlynd and forged it into a formidable private military company.
Reputation
The Volsung Regiment has often been compared with another major global PMC, the Duklav's Legion. Compared to the latter, the Volsung Regiment is measurably smaller and less well-resourced. However, compared with the Legion's reputation for clinical professionalism, the Regiment is reknown for its ferocity and ruthlessness. In particular, whilst it will scrupulously adhere to the laws and customs of war when taking prisoners of uniformed personnel from 'regular' armies and other mercenary organisations, it has been known to execute insurgents or even insurgent-backing civilians out of hand, especially where they back an Elatian-supported cause.
Organisation
The Volsung Regiment consists of three motorised infantry battalions, a light tank company and supporting arms. Roughly 50% of its personnel are Elatian defectors. The remainder is comprised of a mix of native Rokkuringur, Enyaman veterans of the recent civil war, and recruits from around the world. For these reasons, Latin is used as the main command language, although Nordic is also widely spoken. The Regiment practices a mixed-gender recruitment policy.
Rifle Battalions
Each Rifle Battalion is primarily mounted on Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle. It comprises of three rifle companies, a mortar platoon equipped with eight 81mm mortars, a scout-sniper platoon and an armoured car platoon.
Each rifle company in turn can be broken down into a company HQ, three infantry platoons, plus an anti-armour squad armed of twelve men armed with six Spike-LR launch units or 84mm recoilless rifles.
Each rifle platoon consists of three nine-men squads, a radio operator, a platoon sergeant and a platoon commander. Each squad is divided into a squad leader and two four-men fireteams, with one fireteam having a medium machine gun, the other with an under-barrel grenade launcher.
The armoured car platoon is equipped with six Cougar armoured cars formerly belonging to Gristol-Serkonos.
Light Tank Company
The Light Tank Company is comprised of fourteen Type-126 Light Tanks of surplus Gristol-Serkonos stock. They have been retrofitted with laser rangefinders.
Combat Support Battalion
The Combat Support Battalion of the Regiment comprises of the following elements, which are detached to support the rifle battalions as necessary:
- Heavy mortar company (12x 120mm K6 mortars in three platoons)
- Anti-air Company (24x Stinger launchers in three platoons)
- Scout Company
- Engineer Company
- Drone Company
Logistics Support Battalion
The Logistics Support Battalion is comprised of the following elements:
- Medical Company
- Signal Company
- Logistics Company
- Maintenance Company
