The FBBP was founded in 1925 under the name Free Liberals of Besmenia as a right-wing liberal party. In 1938 it was renamed to Free Besmenian Citzen's Party. After Jürgen Rothmann was elected as party leader, the transition to a more centric liberal party began. Between 1964 and 1993 the party had the suffix The Liberals .The party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in Besmenia along with the Besmenian People's Party. The FBBP has been represented in the Federal Chamber since 1932.
