Katharina XII (Adelheid Brunhilda Cunegunde Ermengard Katharina Winifred; born 20 April 1984) is Empress regnant of Angvar. The first to rule as a member of a non-ruling noble house with immediate connections to the Angvarian imperial family, she acceded to the Arcane Throne on 30 January 2016, following the death of her late husband Charles IV, and was self-crowned the following year on 19 August.
Born to the distinguished Beintrussel family in Mogrok, Vitebellia-Stadt, the future Katharina XII is the second of seven daughters of the Marquis de Beintrussel and Lady Johanna Khâz'gorôkh, and was known to her family and close friends as "Katie". She grew up in a village seminary not further from her hometown before she and her sisters moved to Novigard and was educated at Khâr'shúbskaï Boarding School. After attending Ûdmir and Ghôl'gosh Colleges, she went on to work as an assistant teacher for three years in the Rhâg'grosh Quarter until she was summoned by her parents to Mordegard to fulfill her obligations as a lady-in-waiting to the Empress-Dowager Liselotte. In the summer of 2005, she married the Crown Prince Imperial, Charles Eberhard, who then became Emperor Charles IV at the death of his father Frederick VIII; they have three children: Conrad Frederick Louis, Reinhard Walter, and Adelheid. Their marriage lasted for eight years until his death in 2016, due to serious health complications. As Empress consort, Katharina undertakes official duties on behalf of her late husband. She founded the Empress' Trust in 2011 and is a patron, president or member of seldom more than several hundred philanthropic and academic organizations. An avid enjoyer of symphonic, easy listening and light music, she is a friend of and patron to composers Max Pebblesocke and Ezzio Tano and holds the position of Principal Conductor of the Imperial Angvarian Symphony Ensemble to this day.
When her husband died, Katharina made sure their eldest child was not expected to inherit the throne at a 'fragile' age in spite of being the heir apparent of the late sovereign. On the evening of 30 January 2016, she delivered an address to the Curia Imperialis at Saint Ligeia's Palace formally proclaiming herself Empress. Two years since her coronation, she presided over the show trial of forty constitutionalist and parliamentarian conspirators, including pro-democracy activist Hildebrand P. Thalmann, the son of Social Republican leader Helmut Thalmann, who was revealed to be the assassin of her late grandfather-in-law. Their execution on 1 May 2018 was met with nationwide protests against the monarchy which culminated in the 2018 Grishgolbuz Square Massacre, an event which earned her international condemnation. While commencing a self-proclaimed 'anti-corruption campaign' that brought about the investigation and consecutive dismissal of over half a million Angvarian politicians on grounds of disloyalty and defection, she oversaw the summary execution of political opponents deemed affiliated with proscribed groups of interest such as the Red Ribbon Army and the Judean People's Front, the construction of research camps, suppression of trade unions and elimination of political privileges of the Angvarian Ecumenical Catheric Church, while appointing Pope Theodacus V Decius as a member of the Privy Council and Metropolitan Sveinpolk Sonk as Minister of Religious Affairs, a move viewed by advocates of religious liberty as borderline intensiying caesaropapism. During the chancellery of the Duke of Doth, she re-asserted imperial control over Curvania in quelling the August Mutiny, ordered a military intervention in Draconia against syndicalist and integralist rebel groups, and issued an imperial edict prohibiting the Maulland Sea Association of Trade Unions from gathering due to the 2021 Vladivoyna Shipyard Incident.
Katharina ruled as a totalitarian monarch with unrestrainable absolute power, maintaining the same cult of personality her leadership followed as her husband and previous Angvarian sovereigns.
As sovereign, she holds ultimate commanding authority over the Angvarian military as Supreme Commander-in-Chief, plays the role of the absolute representation of Angvar in global relations, and is the Sovereign and Supreme Head and Pontiff of the Angvarian Ecumenical Catheric Church.
