The Balambian War, also known as the Balambian Winter War or simply the Winter War (Balambian: Talvisota) (30 November 1932 - 13 March 1933) was a war between the Second Estharian Republic and the Balambian Free State during the Estharian Civil War. The war began with a Republican invasion of Balamb in an attempt to incorporate the country into Esthar proper. This came largely from Estharian President Jose Carlos Valle, who declared that Balamb is a part of Esthar and must be governed by Estharians as such. Since the rule of Maria III, Balamb had always been an autonomous state within Balamb with its own government and currency. As a result, the Balambian State was determined to retain its sovereignty and as a result, declared its breakaway from Esthar itself. Despite superior military strength, especially in tanks and aircraft, the Republicans and their volunteers suffered severe losses and initially made very little progress.
