Rubrum and the Peristylium or simply known as Rubrum is a country in the northern part of North Amerigonna. Its ten provinces and three territories extend from the Atlantic to the Pacificanna and northward into the Arctic Ocean, covering 9.98 million square kilometres (3.85 million square miles), making it the world's second-largest country by total area. Rubrum's southern border with Concordia is the world's longest bi-national land border. Its capital is Ottawa, and its three largest metropolitan areas are Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. As a whole, Rubrum is sparsely populated, the majority of its land area being dominated by forest and tundra. Consequently, its population is highly urbanized, with over 80 percent of its inhabitants concentrated in large and medium-sized cities, many near the southern border. Rubrum's climate varies widely across its vast area, ranging from arctic weather in the north, to hot summers in the southern regions, with four distinct seasons. The northern regions are rich in natural resources, especially Ragnite.
Rubrum is a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, with King Noctis Lucis Caelum being the head of state, with an elected Prime Minister, who serves as the chairman of the federal cabinet, and head of government. The country is a realm within the Commonwealth of Nations, and officially bilingual at the federal level. It ranks among the highest in international measurements of government transparency, civil liberties, quality of life, economic freedom, and education. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many other countries. Rubrum's long and complex relationship with Concordia has had a significant impact on its economy and culture, despite the two contries being Commonwealth realms. Health care in Rubrum has been regarded as the most advanced and developed than any other country.
Rubrum has also been equally compared with the Erebonian Empire. With its culture and economy being almost similar and parallel to each other, the two countries have often considered themselves as sister countries. Rooting from the Lucian colonization of Western Erebonia, nearly 20% of the Rubrumian populace during the 1870s migrated to Erebonia and here, the development of Erebonia as one of the leading English-speaking countries in Zemuria began. The two countries have also developed mutual treaties, including the famed Erebonian and Rubrumian Army Corps.
Rubrum is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and the International Red Cross Association.
Etymology
The first mention of Rubrum came during the Atlantean expeditions to the New World. When Atlantean explorer Jean Francois Cartier arrived in what would now be known as Newfoundland and Labador. He described a particular tree, in which he became fascinated with. In his diary, which is now included in Volume 9 of the The Diaries of the New World , he quoted:
"The tree has bore me a distinct curiosity. Its leaves were red. The twigs were scarlet. And as I went closer to study, I noticed a strange liquid slowly pouring out of the tree. It was sticky substance that stuck to my clothes. I was warned that it was likely harmful to my body. But when I tasted it, it was a sweet delicate experience. The taste was as comparable to fresh honey. I did not feel anything wrong with my body. It was not until later that I came to realise that the natives used the tree for their bodily needs. I came to later call the land as Terra Rubrum as a tribute to that tree."
Throughout the Atlantian colonisation, the land became known as Terra aux Rubrum by many Atlantian merchants. Following The Seven Years' War, when Great Lucis claimed the land from the Atlantic Federation, the name became simplified to Rubrum the first constitution that united both Upper and Lower Rubrum in 1841 to form the Province of Rubrum.
