The 1979 World Cup, also called the 1979 Highsite World Cup, was an international football tournament contested by men's national teams which took place between 9 April to 16 April, 1979 in Highsite, Candatora. It was the seventh World Cup, a worldwide football tournament held once every year. The tournament phase involved 32 teams, of which all came through qualifying competitions at the start of the event from an original 64 national teams. At the time, it was one of the most watched sporting events in the history of the world.

31 national teams advanced through qualification competitions to join the host nation in the final tournament, with a total of 64 matches played. Candatora became the first host nation to lose in the Group of 32, losing to Caspiaa. Caspiaa went on to defeat Besmenia with penalties in the finals. Sprotavia defeated the UCSS for third.

64 competing countries were divided into eight groups of eight teams (groups A to H). Teams in each group played one another in a round-robin best two-out-of-three, with the top four teams advancing to the knockout stage with the Round of 32.
