Fallish Airlines Flight 493 was a scheduled flight between Sydenham, Falland and Sagard am Möhne, East Ruthen. On 8 August 2024, the aircraft crashed in the East Ruthish countryside in X after encountering an area of adverse weather; the aircraft was struck by lightning and encountered windshear. 7 passengers and 5 crew members onboard were killed while a further 9 passengers where injured.[1]

Aircraft

The aircraft involved was a Washun 130-5 with the registration of A-3946. It was first flown 17 March 2018 and was delivered to Fallish Airlines on 22 March 2018.

Accident

The aircraft departed Sydenham International Airport for Sagard am Möhne International Airport at 5:21 CCST (UTC 4:21) and was scheduled to land at 7:57 (UTC 6:57). As the aircraft approached Sagard am Möhne, the flight crew were informed of adverse weather conditions in the area of the city. The flight crew circled the airport for approximately 20 minutes, waiting for the weather to improve; during this time they debated whether to divert to another airport, but the pilot decided to continue to try and land at Sagard am Möhne. At 8:03 (UTC 7:03) the aircraft was impacted by windshear and struck by lightning 6 minutes later. The aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing.[1]

12 people in total were killed, 7 passengers and 5 crew, while another 9 passengers suffered various degrees of injuries.

  • 47-year-old Captain Leon Hopkins had been employed as a Fallish pilot since Memesa 1996, with a total of 7,493 flight hours.
  • 41-year-old First officer Caleb Williamson, with 11,353 flight hours.

Investigation

As of 9 August 2024, the East Ruthish Amt für Ruthische Luftfahrt (ARL) has opened an investigation into the incident.[citation needed]
