Following a stable five-year term in office Prime Minister Rachel Berry officially dissolved parliament and called for elections to take place on the 30th of May. The results continued the rise of the Progressive Unity Party and shockingly dropped the Conservative Action Party (Malgrave) out of official opposition status in favour of the Malgravean Green Party

Election Issues

The Progressive Unity Party utilised its success in handling the long-standing insurgency and claimed that its reforms of the Royal Navy led to the successes against larger foreign powers. Prime Minister Rachel Berry gained a hit in popularity when she toured the country and visited TDF conscripts close to the quarantine zone in Maldon pledging to bring those responsible to justice, continue modernising the military and work together with honourable allies like Kouralia. The Conservative Action Party blundered when it leader was caught making derisive comments about the Prime Ministers trip to the front lines but rebounded partially when it supported ending the state of emergency. The Green Party typically weak on issues of foreign affairs and internal security surprised many when it pledged to end conscription, the state of emergency and work together with nations like Kouralia and Crystal Spires.

Reports of an anti-magic device being utilised across the country forced the government to admit that such a device had been developed and was now being used in order to protect national security. The Progressive-Unity Party claimed that the implementation of such a device would be used simply to make the use of dangerous spells that theoretically could destroy entire cities impossible. The Conservative Action Party backed calls from rural communities to make magic use across the country impossible, but this action drew protests from rights groups who claimed that banning magic completely would make life impossible for many species. In the latter stages of the campaign were varied with everything from the minimum wage to the amount of litter in public parks being discussed. All parties attempted to maintain a sense of energy through the campaigns with the Green Party and ruling PUP being most successful in this regard.

Campaigns

Progressive Campaign

The PUP was incredibly confident coming into the election, with its Prime Minister known for defeating terrorists, slavers and invading forces the party expected to maintain its current stack of seats. Prime Minister Rachel Berry rewarded the loyalty of her last administration by keeping the same cabinet and used this to tout the line that the PUP was an experienced administration with proven capabilities and results.

Conservative Campaign

The Conservative Unity Party ran a more timid campaign compared to the 2009 Malgravean Emergency General Election but it still suffered a series of gaffes with several candidates being caught making offensive statements. It has also been claimed by anonymous party insiders that a lack of funding led to the parties campaign running out of steam, although this has not been independently verified while others claim that government use of the intelligence services and media gave them the advantage.

Green Party

The Green Party wished to become the official opposition party, organising an aggressive media and volunteer run campaign it purposely targeted weak seats from all parties and sought to energies students with its support for ending conscription. Economically the Green Party continued for a reduction in the size of the research colony and a cessation of the planned infrastructure construction.

Technology Party

The Technology Party reduced the size of its campaign significantly with leader Helen Magnus focusing on maintaining the current portion of seats across the country and pushing forward for internal reforms that in her eyes would save the party from destruction. Nevertheless the party continued to push for an expansion of the Research Colony claiming that that a lack of technological progress in certain sectors would lead to the domination of the economy and cultural sphere by inferior and costly foreign imports.

Economically the Party continued to support increasing economic ties with nations viewed as civilised partners by the Foreign Minister. It did however not directly offend non-civilised nations and continued to support the maintenance of current tax rates and a further reduction in administration, military and environmental spending in order to pay for increased R&D and further construction of the research colony alongside other planned research colonies.

Socialist Party

The Malgravean Socialist Party chances of success were greatly improved when reporting restrictions on the organisation were lifted by the government. It targeted its campaign on strongholds in the north of the country. As always it focused its campaign towards the re-nationalisation of business partially privatised by the government in the 1950's. On the foreign policy front it supports opening relations with socialist and communist nations whilst relations with nations that mistreat the worker like the Greater Pony Herd. The Party continued the idea of ending the countries non-aligned foreign policy and directly promoting like-minded political candidates in countries like Crystal Spires, Kouralia and Breheim

Other Parties

The Future Party stepped into controversy once again when it supported the deportation of non-humans and promoted the development of nuclear weapons. It is currently being investigated by the Special Investigative Service for breaching items of the constitution.

For its position on homosexuals and non-humans the Malgravean Agricultural Coalition was declared an illegal terrorist organisation and was stripped of all of its seats. Andrew Fabray made several statements claiming he was the victim of political persecution before he was arrested for treason, and after a short trial executed by a firing squad.
