Following a five-year term in office, Prime Minister Rachel Berry officially dissolved The Chamber of Representatives and called for elections to take place on the 22nd of March. The results of the election continued the rise of the Progressive Unity Party and provided a historic upset, as the Conservative Action Party (Malgrave) dropped out of official opposition in favour of the Malgravean Green Party

Election Issues

Following the success of Operation Tempest and the end of the long-standing insurgency that had followed the civil war, and the stated success of the Royal Navy and Territorial Defence Force in several international operations and friendly military exercises, the Progressive Unity Party started the campaign off by claiming that their leadership of the country had led the country to make a positive impact on the international community.

In response, the Conservative Action Party put out messaging claiming that the Progressive Unity Party had put the country at risk by opening it up to the international community far too quickly, and its messaging highlighted the high percentage of immigrants that now resided in the Research Colony compared to the local Malgravean population, although the latter campaign material was withdrawn after it received criticism from a wide section of society.

The Green Party started their campaign by releasing a pamphlet on security reforms, including an end to conscription and the break-up of the Special Investigative Service, on foreign policy the Green Party stated discomfort on the countries deepening relationship with Glaristant and the Dornalian Republic, and called instead for focus to be made on opening the country with more like-minded nations like Crystal Spires and Kouralia.

Campaigns

Progressive Campaign

In comparison to 2009, the PUP came into the 2014 election incredibly confident, as with the success of Operation Tempest and several other successes against slavers and other threats, the Prime Minister was able to speak from a position of authority on matters of national security and foreign policy. In addition, the continuing growth of the economy meant that the Progressive Unity Party was able to fend off attacks from the Conservative Action Party about taxation and the state of various state-run companies like AlcoMal.

Conservative Campaign

The Conservative Action Party ran a more timid campaign compared to the 2009 Malgravean Emergency General Election but it still suffered a series of gaffes, with several candidates being caught making offensive comments. Furthermore, the healthy state of the economy was credited for hampering the Conservative Action Party from attacking the Progressive Unity Party on budgetary matters, as the health of state-run companies had resulted in their increasing popularity amongst the wider Malgravean population and made the CAPs call for partial privatisation quite unpopular.

It has also been claimed that the intelligence services played some role in this campaign, with the leaking of a few offensive comments blamed on their interference, while others have blamed the media and the perceived links that the FDY-ASG Cohort has to several journalists in the country.

Green Party

The Green Party had ambitious goals at the start of the campaign, aiming to become the Official Opposition in order to state their disapproval with conscription. It organised an aggressive volunteer-led campaign which became quite prevalent on social media networks and often streamed their campaign on the MalTec Capybara network. It sought to energise students and young people with their campaign to end conscription, and received a considerable amount of support from these groups.

The Greens received some minor criticism when calling for a reduction in the planned size of the Research Colony and for a cessation of several planned infrastructure projects, with the party being accused of short-termism by elements of the trade union involved in the construction sector.

Technology Party

The Technology Party reduced the size of its campaign significantly with leader Helen Magnus focusing on maintaining the current portion of seats across the country and pushing forward for internal reforms that in her eyes would save the party from destruction. Nevertheless the party continued to push for an expansion of the Research Colony claiming that that a lack of technological progress in certain sectors would lead to the domination of the economy and cultural sphere by inferior and costly foreign imports.

Economically the Party continued to support increasing economic ties with nations viewed as civilised partners by the Foreign Minister. It did however not directly offend other nations and continued to support the maintenance of current tax rates and a further reduction in administration, military and environmental spending in order to pay for increased R&D and further construction of the research colony alongside other planned research colonies.

The Technology Party also called for more funding to be put into the understanding of ancestral abilities, and for a research expedition to be launched to increase current knowledge on divine realms and divinity.

Socialist Party

The Malgravean Socialist Party chances of success were greatly improved when as part of ongoing reforms to open up the political process and reduce the amount of censorship in the country, historic reporting restrictions were lifted on the party allowing them to appear on MBC broadcasts for the first time in the 1930's. It targeted its campaign on strongholds in the north of the country, former territories of the Socialist Republic of Malgrave As always it focused its campaign towards the re-nationalisation of business partially privatised by the government in the 1950's, such as the road haulage industry

The Socialist Party also came out against the use of conscription, a method of recruitment they claimed perpetuated the system of capitalism and went against the principles of social solidarity and it called for the abolition of the Paragon Monarchy and the installation of a Paragon Premier.

On the foreign policy front it supports opening relations with socialist and communist nations whilst relations with nations that mistreat the worker like the Greater Pony Herd. The Party continued the idea of ending the countries non-aligned foreign policy and directly promoting like-minded political candidates in countries like Crystal Spires, Kouralia and Breheim

Other Parties

The Future Party stepped into controversy when it promoted the development of nuclear weapons. It was investigated by the Special Investigative Service for breaching the constitution, and forcibly dissolved following this investigation.

Following similar comments The Malgravean Agricultural Coalition, was also dissolved for breaching the constitution and the party was stripped of all their seats. Shortly after this announcement, the Alliance of Farmers, Fishers and Rurals was announced with self-stated pinpoint focus on agriculture and rural concerns, with the group managing to win a number of seats in the Chamber of Representatives.
