In mid 2018, Prime Minister Rachel Berry announced her intention to resign to focus more on her personal life following pressure from the Great Humiliation, with her replacement being Nadzieja Brzezicki. As an election was scheduled for the coming spring it was decided to forgo a snap election and continue the remainder of the term as scheduled.
In a campaign dominated by issues of intelligence reform and foreign policy, the Progressive Unity Party emerged victorious, although analysts noted the continuing rise of the Malgravean Green Party and the Socialist Party . It was a campaign that proved disastrous for the Conservative Action Party (Malgrave), as controversial comments about Malgravean Immunodeficiency Disorder coupled with internal disputes in the party led to their continuing decline.
Election Issues
In the opening stages of the campaign, the issue of potential reform of the intelligence service came to the forefront of political discussion, as allegations about abuses conducted by the Special Investigative Service and the lack of oversight of the organisation were published in foreign media outlets and rebroadcast on local media outlets such as the Royal Malgravean Times and MBC News.
Initially, the Progressive Unity Party stated that it was in favour of reforms to the Special Investigative Service to make it more accountable and fix inherent issues at the organisation, however, by the end of the campaign they had switched their messaging to support more wholescale reform of the intelligence apparatus including the re-establishment of the three agencies that existed before the reforms enacted after the 1938 Epping Bombing.
Both the Malgravean Green Party and the Socialist Party pledged themselves to wholesale reform of the Special Investigative Service, as they had both done during earlier campaigns. In addition, the Malgravean Green Party pledged that compensation would be made to those deemed to have suffered due to these abuses including those with enhanced ancestral abilities who were conscripted into the service.
In stark contrast, the Conservative Action Party refused to support reforms to the Special Investigative Service instead claiming that the allegations levelled against the intelligence service were mistruths spread by foreign media outlets to sow mistrust between the intelligence service and the people.
In the second half of the campaign, a few more issues rose to the forefront such as the current position of state-run industries and regulations around conscription, however, due to earlier issues on the campaign the most prominent of these talking points was foreign affairs.
In this, the Progressive Unity Party sought to distance itself from other political parties, with campaign materials highlighting the success of figures like Nadzieja Brzezicki and Eliot Reymont in expanding ties with Kouralia, the Dornalian Republic, Silverdale, Crystal Spires and Glaristant, with closer ties resulting in improvements to the overall economy alongside greater protections from foreign threats.
The Malgravean Green Party and the Socialist Party continued their prior cooperation on this front, with many commentators stating that the move opened up the path towards a future cooperation agreement or merger which would be designed to counter the grip that the Progressive Unity have on many areas of the country. On a policy front, both the Socialists and Greens indicated a disappointment of the deepening of ties with many capitalistic nations and called for an extension of ties with Kouralia. In addition, the Socialist Party called for a humanitarian expedition to be sent to New Freedomstan to save the people of that country from what they termed reactionist ruin.
The Conservative Action Party initially advocated for a more aggressive form of foreign policy, with senior CAP members stating that relations should be lessened with states that belong to the Dragon Sea Alliance and Imeriata, however, this soon changed following internal disagreements in the party and several gaffes and the overall party position was quite unclear at the end of the campaign.
Campaigns
Progressive Campaign
The Progressive Unity Party came into the election confident of their position, as despite having a new candidate for Prime Minister, the overall membership was quite pleased due to the popularity that Nadzieja Brzezicki held across multiple factions of the party and within the wider public due to her academic work before entering politics.
Furthermore, the continued growth of the economy combined with perceived foreign policy successes meant that the PUP was able to focus their campaign on the benefits brought by their leadership of the country, with the news of successful arrangements with Glaristant and the Dornalian Republic being used as proof of their foreign policy credentials and ability to maintain a steady-ship even during troubled times.
Conservative Campaign
The Conservative Action Party continued to suffer in relation to their successes during the 2009 Malgravean Emergency General Election, as they suffered another series of mistakes, including the leaking of embarrassing and offensive comments that their leader made about MIDD.
In the course of their campaign, the Conservative Action Party tried to distance itself from these comments and inspire their party membership by making bold comments about everything from the privatisation of state-run industries like MalTra and MalTec and by taking an aggressive stance on foreign policy, however, the popularity of these state-run industries combined with internal party disagreements over this new foreign policy stance led to dissatisfaction within the party which spilt over to the general electorate.
Green Party
Following on from their historic success in the 2014 Malgravean General Election, the Green Party aimed to cement their position as the Official Opposition to continue their fight against conscription. It was able to organise a widespread volunteer-led campaign which again was quite prominent on social media, with speeches and other campaign events often being streamed on the MalTec Capybara network.
Unlike the earlier campaign, the Green Party dropped earlier proposals to reduce the size of the Research Colony and instead called for a focus on environmental research at the colony, with the party promoting expeditions to connect with various seaborn communities in Mystria so that environmental regulations may be adapted to suit their needs and requirements, a movement which increased their popularity within academic communities that had previously snubbed them in favour of the PUP, Socialists or Technology Party.
Technology Party
The Technology Party was still suffering from earlier crushing defeats which had followed on from their fall from power in the 2000 Malgravean General Election, however, with their long-serving leader Helen Magnus they were able to rally together and put together a nationwide campaign, although during the campaign insiders admitted that their overall strategy had evolved from one of gaining power to one of influencing other parties.
As expected, the Technology Party called for an expansion of the Research Colony, with the party claiming that renewed and continued public works projects combined with the scientific and engineering benefits gleaned from the colony will both lead to continued economic growth and prevent state-run industries and other sectors of the economy from being overrun by more costly imports.
Economically, the Technology Party called for new regulations to be brought in to increase the number of funds that state-run companies had to spend on research and development, with the party claiming that profits from more consumerist foreign cultures gave state-run companies the ability to double or even triple the number of funds allocated towards research and development efforts.
In addition to this, the Technology Party called for more support to be put into initiatives to understand ancestral abilities, with the party calling for the establishment of more schools in the country focused on teaching students how to properly manage their ancestral abilities.
Socialist Party
The Malgravean Socialist Party continued to benefit from the lifting of historic reporting restrictions on the party, as their senior leadership and electoral candidates were able to appear on MBC news broadcasts and scheduled debates for the first time since the 1930s, as with prior campaigns it targeted its campaign on strongholds in the south of the country, mostly former territories of the Socialist Republic of Malgrave, however, in addition to this, the Socialist Party was also able to make inroads into Aurora which has typically been associated as a battleground between the Progressive Unity Party and the Conservative Action Party.
The Socialists focused their campaign on industrialising efforts, with senior members stressing that Malgrave was both a nation of science and engineering and promoting plans to build a new series of industrial districts in the Research Colony to work alongside existing R&D hubs. It also continued to campaign against conscription, a method of recruitment they claimed disproportionately hurt working-class communities in the country and it renewed calls for the abolition of the Paragon Monarchy and its replacement with a Republic led by a Paragon Premier
On foreign policy issues, the Socialists called for the expansion of ties between Malgrave and Breheim alongside increased efforts to help promote the return of socialism to the country. It also called for Malgrave to send a humanitarian mission to New Freedomstan to save the land from reactionist ruin
Alliance of Farmers, Fishers and Rurals
The Alliance of Farmers, Fishers and Rurals focused the entirety of their campaign on issues impacting rural communities, agriculture and fishers, an act which was both designed to distance the group from the disbanded Malgravean Agricultural Coalition and due to pressure from its membership which wanted to see a more focused campaign.
Alliance started their campaign by calling for more government support to be given to agricultural cooperatives and for increased investment in rural infrastructure, including further support for rural freight rail networks and modernisations to port facilities in Portmon and Aurora.
In addition, the Alliance of Farmers, Fishers and Rurals called for support payments to be made to fishers who had been hit by storms that had damaged open fish farms earlier in the year, and it called for an investigation to be launched into the possibility of using ancestral abilities to tend support to agricultural efforts and the fishing industry.
