Ilmer Yutrias (born 9 June 1974) is the 7th and current Premier (Pontissiano) of the Caropsyne Pontanore since 3 March 2020. He is not a newcomer to politics and while it is his first term in the Pontiana, he has been in elected office for over a decade. Prior to his elevation to the Premiership, he served as the second and last Speaker of the Cadriana and also held one term in the Euvodorian State Legislature.
Early and Personal Life
Yutrias, a Carthen, was born in the Pontanore State of Euvodora. His father was a respected lawyer while his mother held a position in the State's Civil Directorate. Ilmer's parents noticed his strong academic talent early on in his life and spared nothing to get him into the best educational institutes in the state. He would go on to pursue his doctorate in political science. It was during his studies that he would meet and marry his wife of twenty-five years, Lidria. Ilmer received his doctorate in 1996 and proceed to be a professor of political science at the University. Over the next decade, he and his wife would give birth to three daughters.
Early Political Career
In 2008, he decided to run for a seat in the Euvodorian State Legislature as an independent candidate. Ilmer would make use of his tenure in the legislature to help teach his doctorate students the complex relationships between the Central Government, the States, and where both intersects with the common citizen. He encouraged them to engage in philosophical debates over the system of today and where it could go tomorrow. Sensing an opportunity to better serve the Pontanore, he ran and won a seat in the Cadriana in 2012 where he was in quick succession elected to be its Speaker due in part for his record of reason and flare for well-versed rhetoric with a hint of nationalism. Yutrias's speakership was focused on ensuring the body's parity with the Pontiana.
Rise to Power
In the final months of the Cadriana's existance, both he and the Chairman of the Pontiana's Executive Committee, Marias Gatto, released an expansive report which laid down a wide range of recommended reforms for the Fostana: the upper, appointed chamber of Parliament. The desire to make sigificant changes to the last bastion of aged aristocrats and religious leaders, went back to the early days of Miria Seranoda's Premiership. However neither she nor her successors could attempt such reforms in the name of maintaining their support in combating Dormondism. Yutrias' chamber would be dissolved by Premier Almas Josc three months later. Ilmer returned to the University of Polmona but his time in politics was not over.
By late August, Josc would announce over State Television that he had no intention of holding the Premiership for longer than one year and instructed the Civil Directorate's Electoral Commission to set a date for a election to take place within the first three months of the following year. Yutrias was approached by several of his closest allies from both the dissolved Cadriana and from his days in the Euvodorian State Legislature to not only run for the Pontiana, but become to Premier. He wouldn't outright commit but took time to consult with others including his wife and children. Yutrias declared his independent candidacy in early October 2019.
His electoral strategy was to attempt to emulate the same success Miria Seranoda had in coming to power in two decades earlier without the assistance of any major party. Though he was an independent on the ballot, he was well-known to have firm left-wing positions on many national issues which led to him being branded as the "New Left" candidate in the race by the media. This gave an opening to associate himself with the popular former Premier and embraced it fully in a keynote speech in Zaramela in which he promised the return of a powerful, left-wing government if he was elected. He stated he would finally implement long-desired Fostana reforms, engage in economic consolidation, and reorganize and bolster Pontanore industry which had suffered for half a decade.
The combination of left-wing and a small degree of nationalist populism catapulted him in the polls leading up to the elections on 3 March 2020. The New Left candidates, led by Yutrias, won 65% of the Pontiana's 840 seats. Upon hearing the result, he immediately boarded a flight for the capital to formally take over the reigns of the Pontanore.
