The United Kingdom of Vionna-Frankenlisch, commonly known as Vionna-Frankenlisch is a sovereign country in Magna Europa. Sitting directly in the centre of the Europan Continent, Vionna-Frankenlisch includes the Kingdom of Vionna, the Kingdom of Frankenlisch, islands of Valksland and the Fallen Isles along with an overseas colonial empire including Owaya, Lesser Aegea and Saint Gall.

The United Kingdom of Vionna-Frankenlisch is a constitutional imperial monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. The monarch is King James I, who has reigned since 12th January 2012. The capital of the United Kingdom and its largest city is Frankenlisch, a global city and financial centre with a population of 32.3 million, the largest in Europa. Other major urban areas in the United Kingdom include the conurbations centred on Lawrenceville, Edrington, Brumley, Frederiksland and Donaldia. The United Kingdom consists of two major countries, the Kingdoms of Vionna and Frankenlisch. The two are ruled collaboratively based from Frankenlisch but there is an individual Vionnan Commission based in Lawrenceville. The nearby Isle of Valksland and the Fallen Isles are not part of the Frankenlischian Commonwealth, being parts of the Kingdom of Vionna and the Kingdom of Frankenlisch respectively.

The United Kingdom of Vionna-Frankenlisch is a developed country and has Magna Europa's largest economy by nominal GDP. Vionna-Frankenlisch is considered to have a high-income economy and is categorised as very high in the Human Development Index, ranking 1st in the region. It was Europa's first industrialised country and it's only real power during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The UK remains a regional superpower with frightening economic, cultural, military, scientific and political influence internationally.

Formation

The relationships among the countries of the United Kingdom have changed over time. Many wars were fought between the individual Vionnan Kingdoms and Lordships throughout the nation's medieval history until the formation of the Kingdom of Vionna in 1752 under King Francis of the Riverland which reached from the border of Edrington to the border with Frankenlisch in a straight strip down the modern Vionnan Kingdom. Frankenlisch was formally annexed into the Vionnan Empire under Empress Elizabeth Cerly in August 1792. Following a string of perceived tyrannies and injustices the south Vionnan nobles rebelled against the crown and so did the Frankenlischian common folk. The rebellion of 1805 ended in failure and the Frankenlischians paid in blood for their defiance. The Vionnan nobles were pardoned but the Frankenlischians suffered a wave of new repressions including the creation of a Vionnan Secret Police and, in January 1806, the execution of the last King of Frankenlisch, Issac III. The Vionnan Reign of Terror lasted for just over a year and culminated in the trial of Prince Harold Rotail, Empress Cerly's first son, for high treason.

The trial and death sentence of the Prince was the last straw for the aristocracy of the Vionnan Empire who felt the most repressed throughout the Reign of Terror. Supporters of the late King Issac and the remaining Frankenlischian nobility that had escaped the purges of the Frankenlischian upper classes were the first to rise. In Gestoria, Duke Picroft began raising an army of rebellion and was joined throughout March by just over a hundred nobles and former officers of Frankenlisch and had by June an army of thirty thousand. In Vionna the first to rise were the Poltovs and the Turrells, bonded by the marriage between Duchess Emeline Poltov and Duke Francis Turrell. The Poltov-Turrell alliance raised fifty thousand men by July.

Civil War

Main Article: Vionnan Civil War

With Eighty-thousand men the rebels planned to combine their force at Briceport which had yet to declare for either side. The Count of Brice, William IV, had not actually been notified of the situation so when the Empress' fleet arrived on the 11th of July flying the Imperial Standard rather than the National Standard. Believing it to be a foreign attack, Brice ordered the garrison of Fort Walter and Fort William to open fire of the fleet. In the Battle of Briceport, the Imperial Fleet was repulsed with heavy losses and it was only after the battle that Count Brice realised his mistake and by then it was far too late. By this stroke of misfortune, Brice was forced to declare for the rebels and the rebel armies arrived in Briceport on the 25th of July. Bolstered by 15,000 of Brice's men, the rebel army came under the command of Prince Rotail who had escaped from prison in Frankenlisch.

The rebel force marched on Lawrenceville through Gestoria and was met by an Imperial loyalist force under the Count of Collocken at the Battle of St Edmunds. The rebels won a quick victory against the Count's much smaller force of 20,000 but nonetheless, the Count was able to withdraw under cover of darkness and return to Lawrenceville. By September, Prince Harold's army was bogged down in the Riverland. Such a large force with no real administration to back it up was unable to sustain itself and the Prince was forced to take a drastic move. Prince Rotail split his force.

The main rebel army, numbering 45,000 men from Gestoria and Briceport was under the joint command of Prince Rotail and Duke Picroft and moved back to Gestoria, it resupplied in the city and began advancing towards Frankenlisch. The Grythshead force was commanded by Duke Francis and the Teutonberg force commanded by Duchess Emeline. The Army of Grythshead marched on Cunaris and the Army of Teutonberg marched on Larkinge. Prince Rotail's Army of Frankenlisch was met on the 12th October outside Brumley by a large loyalist force commanded by Empress Cerly and her brother, Jamie, in the following Battle of Rachdale the Prince was killed and his army retreated to Gestoria under the command of the wounded Duke Picroft.
