The United Provinces of Arvorika (Unaneꞇ Pꞃovinꞅeꝺ aꝼ Aꞃvoꞃbꞃoaꝺ), more commonly known as the United Provinces, is a confederation made up of twelve semi-sovereign cantons located in the Western part of Cybelleum in the world of Verthandi. The United Provinces consider themselves the historical successors to the early Medieval Kingdom of Arvorika, a powerful Bretoned coastal state that arose following the withdrawal of the Holy Aventine Empire from its western territories, and which flourished for two centuries until it's destruction at the hands of invading Morgallen warriors, which set up small states on their own in eastern Arvorika. Both the Morgallen and the Arvorikan rump states were eventually incorporated into Kingdom of Auvernia. These Arvorikan and Morgallen states would remain as vassals of the Auvernian Monarchy for centuries, until growing royal centralization led to the War of the Three Leagues, where an assortment of local Arvorikan alliances launched a lengthy revolt against Auvernia. The primarily Catholic and Arvorikan League of Saint Brioc, the aristocratic Fraternal League, and the Pietistic and peasant oriented Covenant of Saints. Though each had its own aims and goals, they were united by a common opposition to the expansion of Auvernian royal authority. Intial attempts to drive the Auvernians from Arvorika were broadly successful, leading to a settlement with Auvernia that gave the leagues autonomy to the point of de facto independence, though remaining under nominal Auvernian authority.

Cantons
The United Provinces are divided into twelve sovereign cantons, with a broad variety of governmental systems, economies, and religious across the Cantons. Five are monarchies; Kaergralon, Dutornaod, Morvarc'h, Kameled, Brasmarz, six are some form of republic; Lanvaeleg, Broceliânde, Corlaè, Tregonev, Ploumanac'h, and Graunville. Lastly, the Abbey of Eusa holds a special status; the small island abbey-state holds only a half-vote in most matters, but is exempted from military service quotas, as well as most taxation.
