Sankt Bunnt is a port city in southwest Dungeyland. It lies at the head of the Neerwasser estuary, 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from the Heidish border. Sankt Bunnt is one of several culturally Heidish cities in the Dangish Empire, but it was excluded from the unification of Heideland in the nineteenth century as it was then administered by Dungeyland. With a population of 54,637, it is the most populous city in the province of Hyde-on-Nearwater. Once an important fishing port, Sankt Bunnt has been eclipsed by ports such as Intel further west that have easier access to fishing grounds in the Sea of Velar.

History

Sankt Bunnt was founded in the ninth century by Saint Bunnt, from whom it takes its name. Bunnt (which is a pet form of the name Boniface) was an early Heidish bishop, a disciple of the Cassonnaise Saint Gaudéric, and his monastery was an important centre of learning in the medieval period. Bunnt was memorialised in a number of Latin vitae and was, briefly, one of the chief national saints of Heideland. Sankt Bunnt was the seat of a bishop until the Reformation, even after the town suffered a severe decline in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. As an important pilgrimage destination, Sankt Bunnt was a thriving port and prospered greatly from trade and donations. The town was extensively fortified against pirates, but these defences were razed following the capture of the city by Andamonia in 1633 and not rebuilt.

The city was a minor member of the Oostwarden League. The city's leaders feared encroachment from their Heidish neighbours to the south and Dangish to the north, and so it ceded control of its diplomatic affairs to Maishändler for protection. Nonetheless, it was occupied by Dangish forces between 1781 and 1783 and subsequently established as a condominium of Dungeyland and the Oostwarden League. Following the League's demise, Dungeyland claimed jurisdiction over the small territory. This was disputed by Zwiebelland, and the matter was only resolved in 1816 during the peace conferences that followed the Bernadottic Wars.

From the early nineteenth century into the mid-twentieth, Sankt Bunnt was among the Heidish-Dangish cities that sought reunification with Heideland, but this call lost much of its popular support in the years following the Heidish Revolution and the suppression of native and religious cultural expression in the country.
