Oubastines are an ethnic group native to the west coast of Scipia who speak Oubastine, Ascalene, and Rezarine (a Rezese-Oubastine Creole). The Oubastines emerged during the Latin Reaction to the Alban Caliphate. As a result, there was an influx of Latin and Romance-speaking men into Northern Scipia. States such as Ascalzar, Fakolana, and Sydalon were reestablished and their Latin-influenced, pre-Azdarin cultures enjoyed a resurgence. During this period, many people also left their new lands in the north to establish colonies and trading posts along the sparsely populated west coast where they lived with Charneans, Arabs, and Aljito. The Oubastines thrived under the harsh, dry environment of the coast and maintained their traditional religion and culture, partially through the support of Rezese traders, who would sail north on the cold Scipian current to Belisaria. In the Sultanate of Tahir, they were also encouraged to remain apart from local cultures for use as soldiers and enforcers.
