Nouvel Ecosse, officially the Republic of Nouvel Ecosse (French: République de Nouvelle-Écosse, Scottish: Poblachd Alba Nuadh), is a federal republic in Lorecia, bordering the Aurora Confederacy, Glisandia and Plätteisen Adler to the south. Nouvel Ecosse is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse nations of Astyria, mostly because of a large immigration influx and a tolerant population.

[history]

Today, Nouvel Ecosse is a federal republic with a developed economy, with Atticus Moriarty acting as President. The country has 48 states, which each ranging far in population and size.

Etymology

The origins of the Nouvel Ecosse name are shrouded in contradictions and inaccuracies, particularly amongst the grammar. Although many argue that the country name should be spelt Nouvelle Ecosse, due to the female masculinity of the Name Ecosse in the French language, others argue that the Rulers of the past regarded the nation as masculine, and thus settled on the masculine grammar setting. The name Nouvel Ecosse first appeared to describe the nation in a letter dated March 1563, where a visiting French merchant, possibly of some sort of Scottish origin, described the Land as resembling that of Scotland. Translated, the letter states that "the rolling mountains and lochs are much like those of Scotland, almost to fool you into believing that this was a Nouvelle Ecosse". It would also appear in numerous documents and reports published on the nation by foreign diplomats, most notably the files of the United Kingdom itself.

The name would soon come into popular foreign and eventual domestic usage, and when the nation declared itself a republic, the name was adopted, replacing the name subjected on the nation by its former rulers.

History

Prehistory

Early Human Settlers arrived in Nouvel Ecosse around 70,000 BC. Believed to have traveled across the ice from continents afar, the settlers survived off of meat scavenged from dead Ecossian Walrus and then from hunting Ecossian Buffalo in the plains to the south-east. So much was the early tribes dependent on the Buffalo that, by 53,000 BC, the animal was extinct. The tribes began practising agricultural methods around 13,000BC, and it wasn't long until the first tribal empires began to form. The Nomadic Mayo tribe came to real prominence, spreading across what are now the Mayo and Fantana regions. Because of its Nomadic existence, the tribes never settled, and although they were grouped together, civilisation failed to develop.

Around 425, the Virkin Dynasty was founded, when some of the Mayo tribes broke off to found Nouvel Ecosse's first recognised city, Starkley. Although it was rudimentary with none of the future defenses it would adopt, it was an impressive feat. Other townships would soon form under the guiding hands of the Virkin Rulers, including the City of Chong-Hue, which, with its coastal advantage, would grow to eclipse that of Starkley in size and density. The area ruled by the Virkins, in what is modern day Andante, would gradually expand in size peacefully as tribes settled and joined this prosperous region. However, the Virkins would soon abandon much of this land due to infighting amongst their ranks.

In 350 BC it is thought that lost Ethlorek merchants stumbled upon the Caledonian Sea, and recognising the potential for possible trade and defense founded the City of Edinburgh. This city would grow to be the regional economic powerhouse, eventually becoming the Capitol of Nouvel Ecosse's largest predecessor, the Caledonian Empire.

Geography

The Mainland of Nouvel Ecosse compromises of the extreme north of the Continent of Lorecia, which lies in the top-half of the mega-continent Astyria. The total area is 4,630,200 km2, comparable to the size of India. Nouvel Ecosse currently has three land borders, with Plätteisen Adler, Glisandia and the Aurora Confederacy, the largest border maintained with Glisandia. The Caledonian Sea Borders the South-East, the ____ Ocean the North and the ____ Ocean the West. The Aurora Confederacy and Rombergian Arctic Islands lie to the far west, and the Yellow Star Republic lies to the South-East. Travel far enough eastwards from Edinburgh and you will eventually reach Euralon.

The territorial extent of Nouvel Ecosse is largely that established by the Keitel Dynasty in the Treaty of Edinburgh circa 1350, with little or no change since then. Important exceptions include Plätteisen Adler, which came under Nouvel Ecosse in 1962 before the pull-out in 2013 and Wayne Island, which was not declared part of Nouvel Ecosse until inhabited in the 1500s.

The geographical centre of Nouvel Ecosse lies on Loch Schuler. Rising to 6,168 m (20,237 ft} feet above sea level, Mount McCafferty in the Hochlands is the Highest Elevated Point, and the longest river is the Keitel River.

Climate

Nouvel Ecosse has a diverse and varied climate, ranging from temperate conditions in the south, particularly the far south-east and south-west to an arctic climate in the far north.

Flora

Fauna

Nouvel Ecosse is home to a diverse range of wild animals, perhaps the most famous examples being either the Ecossian Walrus or the Ecossian Armadillo. Several species of larger mammals can be found in the spreading woodland which covers much of the country, including but not limited to lynx, brown & grizzly bear, wolf, elk, caribou, moose, wolverine, and the musk ox.

Government and Politics

Nouvel Ecosse is both a Republic and Federation, particularly proud of its political status. Every state is proportionally represented by three candidates, with the seats won based on a split of the votes in the region. Some states, such as Edinburgh with a population of around fifteen million, also qualify for up another seven candidates due to their overwhelming population, thus not giving other states, such as the Arya Isles with a population of around six hundred thousand, unfair political advantage. These elected candidates, referred to as Members of Government or MGs, discuss issues that are not devolved to local Government level, such as foreign affairs, economic powers such as taxes, domestic issues such as immigration and military issues. The Party with the majority in the Parliament also elects a Government, or as more often than not happens a coalition is formed, where two or three parties unite to run the country. This Government then proceeds to elect both a President and a Vice-President, who choose their cabinet.

There are currently 296 elected Members of Government, who split their time between debates and voting in the Parliament Chambers located in Edinburgh, and attending meetings with their state and local representatives, who must run surgeries to deal with citizen problems. There are a wide plethora of parties to choose from, mainly situated on a political scale between centre-left and Socialism. However, there are many elected representatives from other parties, including Communists, Conservatives, and the Elvis Loves Walri party, a largely protest party aimed at dealing with the inadequacies presented in the current Government.

At State level, there are also State Council Elections, electing a local Council for the entire state with powers on such items as health, education, justice and local industry, particularly agriculture and fishing. it is at State level that the majority of decision making takes place, although they again devolve the actual powers over running such things down further to the local level. The Head of State is known as a Governor of State, and again appoints a Cabinet. The Governor of State has to have served for one term, or four years, before they can run for the office. Often, Independents are elected to the position of Governor, and their cabinets generally consist of fellow Independents.

At Local level, party politics is strictly prohibited, as it is seen as unnecessary at this level. Candidates are prohibited from mentioning any party affiliations during this time, although they are allowed to retain membership of a party. Local Councils, which cover cities or manage collections of towns and villages, oversee the running of local schools, the building of local minor infrastructure and general local business. In some lesser populated states such as Wayne Island and the Arya Isles, the State Council doubles as the Local Representatives, and these councils are strictly party free. The leader of a local council is referred to as Mayor of Council.

As of the 2011 General Election, the Ecossian Democratic Front formed a Coalition Government with the Green party & the Conservative Republican party. The Opposition is formed by the Ecossian Socialist Party and the Nouvel Ecosse Communist party, whilst there is also the Elvis Loves Walri party & seven elected Independents. At State level, as of the 2011 election the EDF currently runs or is part of the coalition that runs 33 of the 48 councils, whilst the Socialist Party runs or is part of the the coalition that runs 22 of the 48 Councils. The Communist Party has a majority council in Bacharach, and the Green party has two majority councils in Fife and Kerevan.
