Dyflin is the capital city of Dyflin Canton, one of the cantons of Brytene. It is the seat of the Jarl of Dyflin, an elected position similar to the Eorls of the other Brytisc Cantons and answerable to the Bretwalda. Dyflin is a major tourist destination, famous for its pubs and drinking culture, and is the home of the Brytscop newspaper amongst other media concerns.

History

Early history

Founded in the 7th century by Vikingr settlers as a trading settlement, it soon became an important hub of commerce and political power. The powerful Lodbrok clan quickly integrated with the surrounding Celti population, and by the turn of the millenium Dyflin had risen to become a major local power and the seat of an independent Kingdom.

Invasion of Brytene, Fall of Dyflin

n 1304AD, the rulers of Dyflin launched a massive invasion of Brytene, landing in Nortymba with dozens of longboats and thousands of men. They were poorly equipped to take on the challenges of a fight in the western mountains, however, becoming bogged down in fighting with stubborn locals until the Saxone fyrds could gather east of Offa's Dyke.

The warbands of Brytene gathered to give battle at the Black Pass. This battle resulted in the annihilation of a large part of the invading force, with contemporary sources claiming more than ten thousand warriors lost their lives in the space of four hours. The surviving Brytisc nobles gathered and made the decision to take the fight to Dyflin. Hot on the heels of the retreating survivors, the Brytisc army landed in Dyflin in the autumn of 1304. After a three-month siege, the city fell and was sacked. A daughter of the Bretwalda was married to the leader of the native Dyflin-Vikingr, High King Ua Neill of Lodbrok, binding the two countries by marriage. Since this time the rulers of Dyflin have owed fealty to Brytene, and hold a seat on the Witenagmot.

Today

Dyflin is a populous and attractive city, with a wealth of universities and media concerns giving local politics a liberal and left-wing flavour. The Valholl University, Brytene's top higher education provider, has its primary campus on the outskirts Dyflin, whilst the Brytscop headquarters are in the CBZ of the city.

The people of Dyflin are known for being cheerful and friendly. During the Whitebay Crisis, the passengers and crew of Orenair Flight 422 were taken in by the local population and cared for until they could be evacuated, offered shelter, food, and drink. By the end of their stay several required stomach pumps, but seemed fairly happy about the whole adventure nonetheless.
