Gapolania will participate in the Euclovision Song Contest in Piraea], following its debut in the 2021 edition in Lavelle, Gaullica. The Gapolanese entry for the 2022 contest will be decided through the national selection known as Festival della Canzone, an annual competition format organized by the national broadcaster, Radiotelevisione Gapolania (RTG), consisting of two pre-final nights on 11 and 12 February and a final on 13 March. The show will take place in Anfiteatro di Marcelo Erbèna in Nassea.
Background
Prior to the 2022 contest, Gapolania had streamed the contest since 2013. Invitations for the Asterian members to participate in the contest were issued by the Euclean Broadcasting Union in the mid-2010s and the Gapolanese broadcaster decided to debut during the 2021 edition. Festival della Canzone, a format to determine a representative of the nation in the contest, is a popular music competition that was first organized in 1982, following the events of the Asterian Spring. It was created as an opportunity for established and new artists to revive the Gapolanese music scene and traditions. It was won by Alina Sefardù, with her song "Mai", sung in both Vespasian and Chanuche language, making the latter one appear in the contest for the first time. Sefardù finished 16th, receiving a total of 69 points.
On 10 November 2021 the broadcaster confirmed the country would take part in the next edition of the contest and would use the same format to determine its representative.
Before Euclovision
Festival della Canzone 2022 will be the 41st edition of the annual music festival launched first in 1982. Its role as a pillar of the Gapolanese music traditions has brought a relatively large following in both older and younger audiences. The event usually takes places during one weekend (1 - 3 evenings) - despite that, the 2021 edition spanned 3 weeks, with each event happening on Sundays. The competition's format is also a subject of change, with many variations introduced over 40 years to accommodate different needs and expectations.
On 1 December 2021 it was announced that the 41st festival will return to its pre-2021 time frame. Competing acts will perform on 11, 12 and 13 February, with each performance contributing towards the final result. The contest's supervisor, Giovanni Caltera, stated the festival will feature 20 established acts that would be further joined by 4 newcoming acts picked through Selezione Juniore (Juniors' Selection), a small scale format preceding the original show established as a platform for young artists that have recently debuted on the music scene. For the first in the event's history, participants could enter a song in any language, previously restricted only to a language used nationally or regionally in Gapolania.
Competing entries
The application period for both the final show and the junior's selection opened on 8 December 2021 and lasted until 1 January for young artists and 8 January 2022 for the established acts. The entry might not be performed by a Gapolanese citizen but in that case at least half of the song creators must come from the country. 171 entries were registered for the junior's selection while 306 entries came from the established artists. They were then shortlisted by a jury panel consisting of academy experts, conductors and press members.
Newcomer selection
Out of all entries that applied for Selezione Juniore, the juries shortlisted them to 12, which then later performed live during the show on 8 January in the building of RTG broadcaster in Zeta. 4 acts advanced to the proper contest, a choice made solely by the present jury members.
