Gyneld Welelmsen (pronounced /gʉːnəud weːləmzən/) is the current Prime Minister of Vyvland. She is also the leader of the Christian Democratic and Conservative Party, the country's largest party, and a member of Parliament representing the constituency of Melfrop-Wenref. Before becoming Prime Minister, she was country's Minister of Welfare and Labour, the government department with the largest budget. At age 35, Welelmsen is Vyvland's youngest-ever Prime Minister and is the first female leader of her party.
Early political career
Welelmsen first joined the KDC in 1995 at age 15. She was the leader of Conservatives of Tommorrow, the party's youth wing, from 2000 to 2003, and was encouraged by party grandee Welelm Taolin to enter into parliament. After a year working in a national park in Magane, Welelmsen put herself forward for the candidacy for the seat of Melfrop-Wenref, in northeastern Kros. With Taolin's advocacy, she won the candidate selection process, as the previous member had resigned after the 2004 party reforms. In the 2005 general election, Welelmsen was one of only a handful of Conservatives to see their vote share rise.
After a spell in shadow cabinet, Welelmsen was appointed as the Minister of Welfare and Labour in the three-party coalition cabinet after the 2013 general election. During her time at the ministry, she has been responsible for overseeing controversial union reform laws.
Before Kurt Blymont's resignation, Welelmsen had been linked by de Kronikel and others to a leadership bid upon Blymont's leaving office. This was confirmed when Blymont resigned in July 2015; Welelmsen launched her candidacy in the 2015 KDC leadership election a few days later, gaining the support of many on the reformist and liberal wings of her party. Welelmsen was declared the winner of this election on 31st August.
Prime Minister
Welelmsen was confirmed as Prime Minister in a vote in Parliament on the 4th September 2015, despite a small rebellion from some backbench MPs in her Liberal Party coalition partners. The first major test of her time as KDC leader was the 2015 local elections, in which her party performed better than expected - KDC had been anticipated to see a small fall in seat totals but eventually netted a small increase of 33 seats.
Personal life
Welelmsen was born in Stiven in 1980. She currently lives with her partner Vabian Laansmaan both in Lorence and in Wenref in her constituency. She owns two dogs.
