Katharina XII (Adelheid Brunhilda Cunegunde Ermengard Katharina Winifred; born 20 April 1984) is Empress regnant of Angvar. The first to rule as a member of a non-ruling noble house with immediate connections to the Angvarian imperial family, she acceded to the Arcane Throne on 30 January 2016, following the death of her late husband Charles IV, and was self-crowned the following year on 19 August.
Born to the distinguished Beintrussel family in Mogrok, Vitebellia-Stadt, the future Katharina XII is the second of seven daughters of the Marquis de Beintrussel and Lady Johanna Khâz'gorôkh, and was known to her family and close friends as "Katie". She grew up in a village seminary not further from her hometown before she and her sisters moved to Novigard and was educated at Khâr'shúbskaï Boarding School. After attending Ûdmir and Ghôl'gosh Colleges, she went on to work as an assistant teacher for three years in the Rhâg'grosh Quarter until she was summoned by her parents to Mordegard to fulfill her obligations as a lady-in-waiting to the Dowager Empress Liselotte.
On 30 January 2016, at thirty-two years old, she proclaimed herself Empress in a joint meeting of the Curia Imperialis. During her rule, the recent 2016 Instrument of Government took effect with her explicit consent, officially granting her unrestrained absolute power than that of her unabridged limit. Thus, her prerogatives as sovereign of Angvar were expanded to include exclusive assents on laws ranging from proscription of specific groups of interest to setting quotas on new fossil fuel exports. She presided over the show trial of thirty anarcho-syndicalist insurgents, which saw the execution of Social Republican activist Günther P. Thalmann. This, among subsequent events, incited a nationwide dissent that culminated in the 2018 Grishbolguz Massacre, which additionally saw the summary executions of pro-democracy activists and others deemed 'undesirable insurgent-criminal elements' and 'mere cannon fodder for the Armed Forces', mass deportation of intellectuals into remote labor camps, suppression of 'renegade' labor unions while ensuring the loyalty of the remaining few, and eliminated certain political privileges given to the Angvarian Catheric Church while appointing the incumbent Pope as a member of the Privy Council, all of which earned her the ire of the global community and the reputation of Angvar as a 'rogue state'. As with her deceased husband and previous Angvarian sovereigns, Katharina maintained an immediate imperial cult of personality over her subjects.
