Map of the Vismar Region (in Hellonian)

The Vismar region is a historical and cultural-linguistic region in souther Veterra, characterized by a common ethno-cultural Vismaric heritage and the dialect continuum between South German and Hellonian. While Ellashian and Nambalonian are related to both of the previously named languages, they have grown to much appart and do not share a dialect continuum with Hellonian or South German.

Etymology

The name Vismar is thought to go back to the Proto-Vismaric compound *Fiskaz-marī, which appears later in Old Nambalonian as Fiscmere and in Proto-Germanic (Old German and Hellonian) as Fiskmeer. The earliest identified source for the name Vismar is the Elder Guide of Vismaria, dated to the fourth century A.D.

The Vismaric stem can be reconstructed as *Fiskaz- meaning "fish" or "sea creature" (English fish, German Fish, Dutch vis). The second segment of the name has been reconstructed as *mari, meaning "sea" or "lake". The name Vismar would then mean "Sea of fish", which is the most accepted etymology, as the name of the Vismar Sea was recorded first. The name Vismar was then later given to the region as well, and later gave name to the Vismaric peoples.
