The Vœyetska Hockey League (Vœyetskan: Vœyetska Höðar Læd, Denzali: Voteska hockei Iede, French: Championnat d'Vojede de hockey sur glace, Estovian: Viimtdrija jäähokjīgo) is an international Ice hockey league primarily located in Vœyetska. The league consists of 48 teams from 4 countries—37 in Vœyetska, 6 in Denzal, 4 in Sateroc, and 2 in Estovia. The VHL is one of the most popular leagues in Euronia and one of the top leagues in the world in terms of revenue. Teams in the league annually compete for the Lindbeck Köp which was donated by former Vœyetskan Prime Minister Nils Lindbeck to the Vœyetska Ishöðarforantið.
Preceding the founding of the Vœyetska Hockey League, the top leagues of Vœyetska were the Vœyetska Ishöðarforantið and the Allsvœyet. The Vœyetska Ishöðarforantið (VI) was founded in 1920 with 6 teams in its original season, all based in Vœyetska. The VI helped popularize the sport in the nation, especially among the youth. The Allsvœyet was founded in 1936 with 6 teams as well to contest the VI. By the time, the VI had shrunk down to 5 teams. By the early 1940s, the Allsvœyet was generally more popular than its rival because of its wider range of locations. The Allsvœyet also became the first ever league based in Vœyetska to be consistently broadcast on live television. In 1957 the leagues merged into one to spread the sport around the nation as well as economic benefits.
Since the merger of the leagues, the VHL headquarters have been located on the western side of Koarsalburg. Formerly, the VI was based in Sjédal and the Allsvœyet headquarters was located outside of Alikan.
The Lehkinsi Jokers have won the Lindbeck Köp most times with 12 VHL titles since entering the league. The Groblaa Walleye were the most recent champions, who defeated the Filipsvinn Cosmos in the 2022-23 season finals.
History
Following Vœyetska's transition from the Unified Kingdom of Vœyetska to the Kingdom of Vœyetska near the turn of the 20th century, the nation experienced a significant population surge, driven primarily by immigration. Among the influx of immigrants arriving between 1888 and 1910 were individuals from what is now present-day Saint Offeat. By 1900, Saint Offeatians had spread throughout Vœyetska, bringing with them their tradition of ice hockey.
Within five years, wealthier immigrants began establishing outdoor ice rinks during the winter months. The fast-paced nature of the sport quickly captivated young Vœyetskans, offering an engaging pastime well-suited for the country's cold climate. By 1910, the capital city of Sjédal boasted six outdoor rinks and one indoor rink, the latter used to host small hockey tournaments for both youth and adult players.
The country's first organized team, the Helmersburg Stallions, was founded in 1907 by former hockey player Carlo Francis, whose family hailed from Saint Offeat. Just a year later, Vœyetska's first ice hockey league, the Sverje Læd, was established, consisting of teams exclusively based in Sverje. The league's inaugural teams included the Sjédal Monarchs, Sjédal Bulldogs, Alvköping Kodiaks, and Veskallås Mustangs.
While the league initially showed promise, teams struggled to consistently recruit skilled players and ensure regular participation. Of the 24 scheduled games in the first season, 12 were either postponed or canceled due to weather conditions or player shortages. Each team comprised at least seven players: three forwards, two defencemen, a rover, and a goaltender, with a few substitutes available when regular players were unfit to play.
Despite these challenges, the Alvköping Kodiaks emerged as the league's first champions at the conclusion of the inaugural season.
