The de facto head of government of the Kingdom of Sydalon since 1921, is the Chancellor. Though the office of Chancellor of Sydalon has existed in various forms since the country's formation, 18 individuals have served as Chancellor since the 1920. The longest serving head of government was Belandra de Magro, Lady de Magro, who served from 1975 until 1992 for a total 17 years; the shortest official term was held by Adeodata Saabi, who served for three months from October 2017 until January 2018.
The position was first created out of the Haut Cour, an unelected advisory body for the Monarch. The official power of the office remained weak, and appointed by the Monarch to serve a term that lasted until the Monarch lost confidence in the the sitting First Secretary. All Chancellors are required to be ennobled, or serve in the Senate, whether they held a hereditary seat or were appointed. Until 1946, there were no restrictions to prevent the First Secretary to be a member of political parties, but following the sudden abdication of King William VII, amid the Sydalene occupation of the Yarden River Valley, newly anointed Queen Elissa IV sought to remove the overly nationalist influences on the office of First Secretary. This ushered in the era of non-partisan Chancellors, with a Royal decree mandating that individuals holding "ancient offices" were unable to join political parties found in the National Assembly of Sydalon.
