General U Yarzar Htun Tun Yaza (ယရးဇရိ တတုန တုန ယဇ) was a Bethausian military officer and poet who commanded the 2nd Division of the Free Bethausian Army of the East. Noted for his youthful features, he became known by his associates and his men as Maung Yaza (မောင်ယဇ). Yaza is known to be one of the most reliable commanders of the Bethausian military, gaining appreciation from his superior Zaw Sein Arkar and his colleagues.
Early Life
Yaza was born in Machandar in the Sagaing Province (present-day Sagaing Region) in 12 September 1903. When the Tarhaaja War waged with the Imperials advancing onto Kengkaw, his family left for asylum in the United Kingdom. There, he received his education where he became interested in poetry. His works conveyed themes of a lost homeland, life in exile, landscapes and patriotic fervor. Later on, he desired to become a military commander, and soon after, he enrolled in a Lucian military academy and befriended Zaw Sein Arkar, Naing Thuta Maung and Sein Khine. Subsequently, he graduated as a captain.
