2021–22 Liga Primaria Season |
Ascensio Liga Primaria Calcitro, commonly referred to as Liga Primaria, is the top flight professional association football league in Latium. Consisting of 20 clubs, it operates a promotion and relegation system with it's immediate lower-level league, 2Liga Calcitro. The league was sponsored by ULArgentaria from 1997 though 2015 and since 2016 has been sponsored by Ascensio, a Latin tech company.
The Liga Primaria acts as a corporation of 20 football clubs, who act as shareholders. Seasons run from early August to May, with teams playing a total of 38 games, not including domestic cup games or confederation league games. Each team plays each other in the league twice, once home and once away. The majority of games are played on Saturday and Sunday, but with no more than two games a week being played on either tuesday or thursday.
Liga Primaria holds the largest television contract of any Latin professional sport, valued at over $15 billion a year. The league also has various television contracts abroad, including the nations of x, y, and z. Liga Primaria boasts an average attendance of 48,239, one of the highest of any football league. The league currently ranks X in BCFA coefficient and X in the UCA worldwide in the BCFA coefficient ranking.
Of the 92 clubs to have competed since the inception of the Liga Primaria in 1892, seventeen have won the title. The teams with the most championships are: MCS Ascanium (30), Imperialis Ianiculum (28), Athletica Adrianopolis (17), Honoria Ancia (14) and Internationalis Utica (8). Historically, MCS Ascanium, Imperialis Ianiculum, Athletica Adrianopolis, Honoria Ancia, and ASIL Ascanium have been considered the big five, with Arminium Flaminiana and Internationalis Utica occasionally competing for top honors. The current champions are Imperialis Ianiculum.
History
Format
The competition format follows the usual double round-robin format. During the course of a season, which lasts from August to May, each club plays every other club twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 38 games. Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points, with the highest-ranked club at the end of the season crowned champion. Head-to-head is the first tie breaker, with goal differential coming next if head-to-head was not successful in creating a winner.
Atop the Latin football pyramid, Liga Primaria relegates its bottom three finishers to the second level 2Liga Calcitro. Conversely, three teams are promoted from 2Liga Calcitro to Liga Primaria: the league champion, runner-up and playoff champion between teams who finished 3 through 6.
The top 6 teams in Liga Primaria also qualify for spots in the Belisarian Champions League. Teams that finish in the top 4 qualify for the Imperial Champions Cup.
Sponsorship
Beginning in 1984, Liga Primaria has held a league-wide sponsorship. The first such sponsor was Celer automotive, though they opted not to renew their sponsorship following the 1990-91 season. ULArgentaria sponsored the league from 1991-92 until 1999-00 seasons, and again starting in 2001 until 2015. Since 2016, Ascensio is the league-wide sponsor with the deal running until 2022.
