Chekumabvazuva is the second-largest city of Rwizikuru and the capital of the province of South Balisaland. Situated east of the Rwizikuru River, it is part of the Port Fitzhubert metropolitan area.
Etymology
The name Chekumabvazuva derives from the Rwizi word meaning "eastern one," as it refers to its location east of the Rwizikuru River. Under colonial rule, it was name as Chekumabazuva, as Estmerish phonology made it difficult for the white population to pronounce the name.
It was historically known as Guta reMabwe, which dervies from the Rwizi phrase meaning "stone town," as it was wealthier than Guta reHuni, situated in present-day Port Fitzhubert.
History
Chekumabvazuva was first permanently inhabited around 600 BCE, and served as the main population centre around the mouth of the Rwizikuru River.

Government
Like any city in Rwizikuru, it has an elected Mayor (Rwizi: meya) and an elected city council (kanzuru yeguta).
The city council comprises of twelve members, each representing one of the city's twelve wards, and are elected every four years by all inhabitants of Port Fitzhubert over the age of 21, as stipulated in the Civic Decree of 1965 issued by Izibongo Ngonidzashe. The mayor is also elected in the same elections that elect the rest of the city council.
The current Mayor is Rungano Mubako, first elected in 2014, and re-elected in 2018.
