The Custode CIWS (English: Caretaker) is a Cacertian close-in weapon system used aboard Royal Navy warships for defense against threats such as small boats, surface torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. The growing prevalence of jet aircraft and missiles prompted the Cacertian Armed Forces to pursue the creation of a defensive system for its warships; the Custode was jointly developed between Vitali Heavy Industries and the CNRC Ordnance Bureau.
Since its introduction in 1980, the Custode has been mounted on virtually every modern Cacertian warship to date despite its overall mixed performance. On most ships, it is slated to eventually be phased out for the newer Guardiana CIWS.
