Helmut Þurisassun (18 March 1961 — 19 December 2007) was an Azmaran Radical politician who served as the country's Thingspeaker between 2005 and his death in 2007 who also served as a Member of the Folksmot for the Province of Ostlaak from 1987 to his death.
The youngest member of the 1987 intake, Helmut would gain a reputation for outspokenness and oratory skills in the chamber with a focus on issues such as cost of living and education, and would ultimately serve as Education Secretary between 1997 to 2002 under the governments of Herman Jonssun and Jorś Mâþijassun. After his party left government following the 2002 election, Þurisassun would successfully bid for the party's leadership and would emerge as a staunch critic of the Workers' Party-Gold Flame coalition, ultimately bringing his party to its second-best ever result in the 2005 election.
Þurisassun would become Thingspeaker at the head of a coalition with the Sotirian Democrats and the Green Party, which would soon find itself responsible for managing Azmara's response to the 2005 Recession in which the country would adopt a demand-side response, implementing a significant reflationary fiscal stimulus package alongside financial sector reform. Þurisassun's government is also credited with educational reform and the establishment of a nuclear-free zone in Azmara.
Considered one of Azmara's most effective modern Thingspeakers, Þurisassun's tenure was ended prematurely by his death on the 19th December 2007 in a car accident. Succeeded by his deputy and Sotirian Democrat leader Stefan Aansgaarsun, Þurisassun received a state funeral on 4th January 2008 attended by many Euclean heads of state and government.
