The National Unity Party is a Tiwuran political party and is one of the country's two major parties. The NUP was founded in 2009 by former Tiwuran Democratic Party members lead by Enyinayya Akabueze. The party was formed after many former members of the TDP felt the party and its leaders had reverted back the ways of Tiwura's dictators like Obie Chinwe and Reese Okparro Ndulu. The NUP also felt the TDP had begun falling back towards Mwo nationalism as well as economic liberalism. The NUP also wanted to provide those who opposed the TDP with an alternative to the opposition of the time, the United Movement of the People, which the NUP's members believe are extremist. During the 2011 General Election, the NUP would secure a majority in the Senate and controlled a third of Congress. After President Aondowase Nenge resigned in 2014, the NUP would secure a narrow victory and gain majorities in the Assembly and win the Presidency with Akabueze being elected.
