Alois Steigerwald (3 March 1937 - 27 May 2023) was a Besmenian politican, who served as the defense minister of Besmenia from 2001 to 2005. He previously served as governor of Frankenburg from 1981 to 1999. In 1983 and 1996, Steigerwald served as president of the Federal Senate.
Steigerwald was born on 3 March 1937 in Berkafurt (then Ochsenbeinfurt) in West Besmenia. After graduating in 1955, Steigerwald studied economics and political science at the University of Ochsenbeinfurt. He finished his studies in 1959 with a degree in business administration. As a result of the West Besmenian Revolution and the ensuing democratization, Steigerwald entered politics in 1966. From 1966 to 1970 a member of Democratic Besmenia and from 1970 on of the Free Besmenian Citizen's Party, Steigerwald became a member of Frankenburg's regional parliament in 1975. From 1977 to 1981 he was Minister for Social Affairs, Health and Sport in Frankenburg.
Steigerwald was his party's candidate in the 1981 Frankenburgian state election, in which the FBBP won the election and, under Steigerwald as governor, formed a coalition with the SDU from 1981 to 1993 and later with the BVP from 1993 to 1999. In the 1980s and early 1990s, Steigerwald was very popular in Frankenburg. In the late 1990s, the pressure on Steigerwald increased due to a recession in the regional economy. When the BVP became the strongest party again after the 1999 state election, Steigerwald announced a withdrawal from the Frankenburgian regional policy.
From 2001 to 2005 he was federal minister of defense under Prime Minister Ursula Kummstein. His tenure as federal minister of defense was marked by Besmenia's military involvement in the Second War in Vulkaria. After the 2005 Besmenian federal election, Steigerwald left office and left politics after almost 40 years.
